Dt 6:4-5. Tony van Drimmelen. Have you ever wondered, why? Children are not the only ones who like to ask the “why” questions. Like a parent speaking to his children, Moses addresses the nation of Israel. He can anticipate a time when the nation will ask, why? Why all these commands and decrees from the Lord? And Moses replies with the command to love God more dearly so that it changes them and they obey God’s commands from the heart. He reminds them how God has delivered them out of Egypt. Then he charges the parents to tell that same story of deliverance to their children. For Israel this was the most advanced version of the gospel at the time. Today we have the gospel story about God saving us from sin and death. Our children will want to know, "why?" The story of God's love for us is the only story that will answer their questions.
