John 15:1–17 ESV
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

In OT Israel is seen as the vine, but it is often disobedient Israel. God is seen as the vinedresser or gardener in both. But in the NT metaphor, JESUS is the vine! So the way to God is not through Israel but through Jesus!

Psalm 80:15
Psalm 80:14–16 ESV
14 Turn again, O God of hosts! Look down from heaven, and see; have regard for this vine, 15 the stock that your right hand planted, and for the son whom you made strong for yourself. 16 They have burned it with fire; they have cut it down; may they perish at the rebuke of your face!

Now Christ says this of his father, both with respect to himself the vine, and with respect to the branches that were in him: he was the husbandman to him: he planted the vine of his human nature, and filled it with all the graces of the spirit; he supported it, upheld it, and made it strong for himself, for the purposes of his grace, and for his own glory; and took infinite delight in it, being to him a pleasant plant, a plant of renown. Now Christ says this of the Father, both with respect to himself the vine, and with respect to the branches that were in him: the Father was the vinedresser to the Son - that is He planted the vine of his human nature, and filled it with all the graces of the spirit; he supported it, upheld it, and made it strong for himself, for the purposes of his grace, and for his own glory; and took infinite delight in it, being to him a pleasant plant, a plant of renown. What great concern this vinedresser has for the vine and its branches!
Ask the end questions
Connected to the vine:
grace to interact with the other branches
wisdom to bring along the younger branches - why does an old man plant a pecan tree?
truth that protects every branch - boundaries, pleasant places
all flowing through branches to produce fruit
knowing that apart from Him, we can do nothing
Bearing Fruit
Train up a child in the way he should go and… proverb not promise, but catch the words. Nurture a child in the way he is bent. If he is bent toward sin, retrain him. If bent toward the glory of God nurture according the that bent.
Unique from the natural order because we each have unique fruit, within the boundaries of fruit bearing. Fruit salad tree
Not Bearing Fruit
Before we tackle the branches that are taken away, let’s remember two verses we have studied in the past few months.
John 6:37 ESV
37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
John 10:27–30 ESV
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”
…he takes away… to carry away, to take up, to withdraw. It is also used ‘to destroy’.
We can never build a theological doctrine, a belief about God, on an single scripture that appears to contradict other scripture. We must consider the truth being taught:
Believers have the benefit of being connected to Jesus.
Connected believers will produce fruit.
The difficulty of verse 2 is that some will stop producing fruit. If there is a believer who has stopped producing fruit, but has not been taken home, there is fruit yet to come. Pray to that end. I dont get to make that call. Not for me to decide!
I know its an OT example, but remember King David. Not bearing fruit while chasing and covering his tracks regarding Bathsheba. But that wasnt the end.
This is the Fruit
Fruit we bear begins with the fruit of the spirit from .
According to It continues with replicating Christ in us, as in the natural world.
But scripture gives us other instances of fruit bearing: says holiness and obedience are fruit. Paul, in said generous giving is fruit. Service grows, like fruit, out of our abiding life in . And the praise from our hearts and mouths is fruit to the glory of God in .
That my joy may be complete. That your joy may be full.
He wraps it all up with love. All fruit bearing is to be done in love
What fruit do I bear?
What do I do to stay connected to the vine? To submit to the pruning of the vinedresser?
sheep, cows, chickens
