Walk In The Light
This letter was written to Christians in a world where there was a real fear of darkness.
Evil was associated with it.
Modern man, with his electric lighting, has a hard time understanding how societies were developed around the idea.
When night came, men slept, or watched in anxiety or fear of the dark.
John tells us that God is more than just light.
There is no darkness (evil) at all in Him.
He says: “You claim to be sons of God, Light has enlightened you, do your actions show this?”
John’s message emphasized that God is light.
Light enables people to do their work.
It produces growth in crops; it reveals beauty and provides safety.
Light represents what is good, pure, true, holy, and reliable.
Light reveals; light shines.
God is so completely “light” that in Him is no darkness at all.
“Darkness” represents what is sinful and evil
It is important that we walk in the light
Grace does not give us the right to live in Sin
God expects his people to walk and live a Holy Lifestyle
We all stumble in many way but we strive each day to walk in the light.
When Jesus was on earth, his divine life illuminated the inner lives of his followers.
Everywhere he was present, he gave light.
This light penetrated people—exposing their sin and revealing divine truth.
No one could come into contact with Jesus without being enlightened.
So it is for the Christian who is indwelt by the Spirit of Christ.
In his presence, we see our sin and his glory.
No true Child of God can be comfortable living in Sin
If you are comfortable then something is wrong.
I am not saying to walk in the light to be saved.
Or to do good works to be saved.
To claim to belong to God but then to go out and live in sin is hypocritical.
In fact, John says that people are lying if they claim fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness
Now, I became a Ramdhan when I was born into the Ramdhan family.
I can never be unborn.
That speaks of Sonship.
No matter what I might do, I'm my father's child.
But if you disobey your heavenly Father, then there's the matter of fellowship.
And so, God like a loving father, chastens those whom he has received.
And so, sonship—that is fixed by birth.
But fellowship, that is determined as to whether or not we are obeying the father's instructions.

the most characteristic thing about light, the thing we are enjoying at this very moment and probably the first discoverable fact about light, is that light reveals.
I can see you because there is light in this room; and you are unfortunate enough to see me for the same reason.
Light reveals.
If there were no light I could hear you but I could not see you.
Darkness conceals, but light reveals.
Notice something else.
John does not say, "Light is God."
It is, "God is light."
You cannot reverse that.
If it were, "Light is God," then, of course, the Indians who greet the rising sun with arms outstretched and burn incense to it are truer worshippers of God than we.
No, it does not say "Light is God," but "God is light."
Application
Let us make it a habit to walk circumspectly before God

John was writing to enlightened Christians.
His use of the personal pronoun “we” shows that he included himself in their fellowship.
All Christians are to have fellowship with one another.
It is theoretically possible to have fellowship with God and not with man (John on the Isle of Patmos), but John longed for the day he could fellowship with man again.

By living in the light, John did not intend that all Christians should be hermits or mystics, living in solitary contemplation of God.
Instead, their fellowship with Christ should produce the desire to join others in loving devotion
True spirituality manifests itself in community fellowship.
One cannot say that he or she communes with God and then refuse to commune with God’s people
Such was the case with some of the false teachers of John’s day, and this situation exists among false cults today.
Often their followers and leaders claim to have special relationships with God, but they don’t affiliate with other believers.
They stay isolated and withdraw from everyone else.
John’s point is that the natural result of living in the light (in fellowship with God) should be joyful relationships with other Christians.

What binds us together is Jesus and we ought to be there for each other because of him

John tells those early Christians that God is a forgiving God.
In order to be forgiven by God, the Christian must confess his sins.
Before he can confess them, he must first admit them.
To refuse to admit them makes God a liar.
Being God’s people does not mean denying sin (1:8), but confessing it.
Because all people are sinners, Jesus had to die.
God graciously gave his followers provision for the problem of sin.
John explained it here in a nutshell: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
None of us is perfect
we will sin at times
Every day we sin.
Sin of Omission and Sin of Commission
A sin of omission is a sin that is the result of not doing something God’s Word teaches that we should do.
A sin of commission is a sin we take action to commit, whether in thought, word, or deed.
