Title: Victory in the Lord Jesus Christ

Title: Victory in the Lord Jesus Christ

Text:

(v. 50) - “Now this I say...” is a phrase of emphasis. What is to follow is of ultimate importance.
corruption cannot inherit incorruption
it is an inheritance
Today, there are a gambit of emotions that course through our hearts.
Some people are overwhelmed by life, and they want to quit.
Still others are overwhelmed by temptations, and they want to give in.
Others are in a state of slumber, having been lulled to sleep and ineffective service for the Lord
Some are still in unbelief
Thesis Statement:
The victory that you have in Jesus Christ is more profound than we could have every imagined and more encouraging than any other source of encouragement.
A person who believes the depths of the victory they have in Jesus Christ will regularly and truly rejoice in thankfulness to God.

(1) How victory in Jesus causes Christians to understand the temporal (v. 51 - 56)

Mystery Revealed/Solved:
v. 51 - 53 Here's what's going to happen: mortal changed to immortal...etc This is the mystery revealed in the NT -
v. 54 - 56 Here's the mystery that was concealed in the OT, and this is why this will happen
this passage is tied to the Day of the Lord, a rule upon this earth from Mt. Zion, a future kingdom
Part of a trilogy of great things that will happen:
(1) death, swallowed up in victory
(2) wipe away all tears
(3) remove the shame of his people
God is pronouncing the inevitable judgment upon Israel, under the reign of her final king: Hosheah. the picture is of a child who does not want to come through the birthing canal and will die. God is personally judging Israel for her spiritual adultery.
It is a taunt against this enemy, who previously had the LORD on His side, but now something has radically changed and death is suffering defeat. Victory has been given to us through Jesus.
God entered enemy territory
Now he calls enemies who are under the dominance of death to claim Him as Lord
Those who have Christ are assured of a future, miraculous, immediate change from corruption to incorruption, in preparation for a time when
(1) death, swallowed up in victory
(2) wipe away all tears
(3) remove the shame of his people
Application:
A person who believes the depths of the victory they have in Jesus Christ will be able to rightly discern between the eternal and the temporal. [A person who really believes the corruption of their current state will not live for their current state.]
The distractions of the immediate
health
We invest much of our emotions and time into our health
pleasure
The fear of death

(2) How victory in Jesus causes Christians to burst forth into thankfulness (v. 57)

A person who believes the depths of the victory they have in Jesus Christ will thrust themselves abundantly into the work of the Lord.
All praise goes to God because he gives - see v. 38
The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The First Letter to the Corinthians F. Explanation of the Necessity of the Resurrection for the Realization of God’s Ultimate Victory, 15:50–57

In a strange paradox, the Christian needs to learn that “it’s not about me” but about Christ the Lord and his agenda. Once that has been properly grasped, one may go back and recognize that, as it turns out, God’s agenda has been that of redeeming us (and the rest of his creation) and giving us the ultimate victory over the enemies of his righteous reign.

Application:
A person who believes the depths of the victory they have in Jesus Christ will regularly and truly rejoice in thankfulness to God.
We are not continually bathing ourselves in the eternal truths of the sufficiency of Jesus Christ.
Example: [see document/note for detail]

(3) How victory in Jesus causes Christians to enter into toil [hard work] (v. 58)

- The exhortation “to abound” or “to excel” (περισσεύειν, perisseuein) also appears in 14: 12 and is connected to building up the church.[ 7] Putting these two pieces together may shed light on the meaning of the ambiguous phrase “abounding in the work of the Lord.” It would be related to whatever contributes to building up the church. - Garland, David E.. 1 Corinthians (Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament) (Kindle Locations 17104-17108). Application:
A person who believes the depths of the victory they have in Jesus Christ will thrust themselves abundantly into the work of the Lord.
We are bombarded with discouragement, busyness, activity, leisure, self-deceived thoughts that we are doing just fine, standards of measurement that are not Christ-centered
Questions:
Has the weight of the victory that we have in Christ convinced you this morning?
Unbeliever, come to Jesus Christ
Believer:
Immerse yourself in the truth of the sufficiency of Christ this morning.
Will you see how it is not in vain to fully thrust ourselves into the work of the Lord?
