Bible Study

We are continuing our study of Jude tonight. We are looking at the third part of verses 3-16. We are looking at Jude’s warning concerning false prophets. Tonight, our focus is on verses 12 - 16, but let’s read verses 1-16 so that we can consider our passage within context.
Jude 1–16 NKJV
Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ: Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries. Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves. Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah. These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots; raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage.

False Teachers are spots and blemishes upon the fellowship of the church.

The Greek word for spots can mean submerged rocks or reefs that can wreck a ship. False teachers can and will wreck the fellowship of a church. Just as a hidden reef can sink a ship, false teachers and false believers can sink a church.
The early church shared meals together regularly when they met. Of course the fellowship was much more than just breaking bread together. In a church, there is a spiritual element to our fellowship.
Matthew 18:20 NKJV
For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”
Titus 1:16 NKJV
They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.
Titus 1:15–16 NKJV
To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled. They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.

False teachers are filled with emptiness and instability

Jude 12 NKJV
These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots;
This a picture of the hope that a false teacher offers to people. Their hope is empty and unstable.
A false teacher cannot water the seed of God’s Word in people’s hearts , nor can their teaching bear fruit in people.
The false teacher is unable to help people face the trials and temptations of life. They cannot prepare people to face eternity. In dealing with God; His Word, and His church, the false teacher is nothing more than a cloud without water and a tree without fruit. The false teacher may sound like he offers hope, security, and fulness of life; but his message is unstable and empty.

False teachers have things that are shameful in their lives.

Jude 13 NKJV
raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.
Have you ever been on the sea shore after the tide has gone out following a storm, or very strong waves? What does the waves leave on the sea shore? A bunch of drift wood, trash, seaweed, and other things. It leaves ugly things. While I can not judge the men who have recently fallen due to immorality, I have read articles regarding several inappropriate comments and behaviors of Bill Hybels.
James 3:10 NKJV
Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

False teachers are like shooting stars

A shooting star can be seen by many people, and is very visible in the night sky, but is quickly burns out to darkness.
2 Corinthians 11:13–15 NKJV
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.
The false prophet will eventually be exposed in the end.

False teachers are doomed

They will be judged by Christ.
They will be judged for all their ungodly deeds.
They will be judged for all of the untrue, harsh, and defiant words spoken against Christ.

False teachers are grumblers and complainers.

They complain about their job, position, income, church, spouse, lack of recognition, hardships, etc.
They will complain about anything and everything.
They cannot be content.
A true follower of Christ finds contentment in the sufficiency of Jesus Christ.

False teachers walk after their own lusts or desires.

They are more interested in gratifying themselves than they are interested in following the Holy Spirit.
As I have prepared this, I have come to the conclusion that there may be times when a minister or Sunday School teacher was walking with the Lord, started living according to the flesh, then repented. It is possible for someone to be a false teacher for a time. However, I believe that Jude had in view someone that was always a false teacher.

False teachers us swelling words in their teaching and preaching

While the Greek and Hebrew meanings are very important, it is unnecessary for a teacher or preacher to quote the original languages every time he speaks.
I have heard it said of some preachers that they were good preachers until they got their doctorate.

False teachers use flattery to gain advantage.

They are interested in gaining the support of people rather than depending on God for their self worth. A false teacher is not interested in pleasing God, rather, he is interested in pleasing people and building a following.
Let us beware of those that fit the characteristics that Jude provided to us.
