When in times of Trouble we should call out to Jesus.
When in times of Trouble we should call out to Jesus.
1 Give ear to my words, O Lord; consider my groaning.
2 Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray.
P
David is in trouble, he is going through a hard time and what does David do. He calls out to God.
He ask God for him to hear him.
Second, he ask God to consider his groaning.
Third, He ask God to give attention to the sound of his cry.
David repeats himself saying the same thing in different ways. He is begging for God to hear him as he calls out to him.
Think to a time where you where in such a desperate situation. The path before you looked unpassable. You didn’t see light at the end of the tunnel. You had no hope.
This is where David is at and what does David do. He calls out to God.
David knows that God can take the path that seems unpassable and make a way.
David knows that God delights in giving light to those who can’t see it.
David knows that God delights in giving hope to the hopeless.
In David destress David calls out to His King and His God.
Notice that David says my King and my God.
David had a personal relationship.
He doesn’t refer to them as the people of Isreal God or the people of Isreal King.
He refers to them as my King and my God.
David king and God was not some idol or false God.
It was the God that had made a coveneat with Abraham and before Abraham Noah.
It was the God that had spoke everything into existence.
Have you made Jesus your Savior. Is he your King, is he your God.
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
When David needed help he called to the only that could help him and that was his King and His God.
Notice what David does he prayers.
In our times of trouble, in our times of hardship, when things don’t look good. Prayer is not often our first response.
We google or go on line.
We reach out to friends
We Worry and think for ourselves trying to find a solution.
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;
8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
David knew that the first thing he needed to do was call out to God. He knew that God would give him wisdom.
We see Starting in verse 3 David sharing his heart with God?
When was the last time you opened yourself up and just shared what was on your heart with God?
We know that God already knows what is on our hearts. But their is just something that frees us when we share what is on our hearts with our King.
We also know that God delights to hear what is on our hearts.
4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
We see
3 O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.
We see that David in his prayer starts off by talking about how in the morning he worship God and watch to see what you are doing.
How often do we get up in the morning and have a desire to worship God first and then watch.
Many of us may get up and read our Bibles and then we move on to the next task. But, how many of us would confess that many times we don’t take the time to watch.
We through up prayers and then we don’t watch to see if God answers them.
We ask God for stuff and then just move on.
The other day our family was going to Durham to celebrate Ginnie Dad’s Birthday.
We passed by a place on interstate 95 that use to be called Cafe Rescae.
When I was in college I would pass by that place every Sunday morning going to lead worship at a Church in Hope Mills.
As I would pass I committed to pray that those inside would come to Christ and the place would close.
This was like 15 years ago.
It has been shut down for several years now. But as we drove by the other day to Ginnie Dad’s birthday their was a sign out front on the fence that said something like Jesus Saves, or Jesus loves you.
Right their going to her dads birthday party driving down the road I thanked God for what he had done in answering my prayer.
When we pray we need to watch and see God answer our prayer.
We must also understand sometimes God answers our prayers in ways we may not like or understand.
The person who was on the roof in the flood.
4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you.
5 The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers.
6 You destroy those who speak lies; the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
Pslam 5:4-6
David is honest in his prayer.
He reminds God that he doesn’t delight in wickedness or evil.
God can have nothing to do with sin or evil.
This is why when Jesus went to the cross He had to do it without his father.
This is why people will be sent to Hell. Because God can have nothing to do with sin.
And the only way we can get to heaven is because our sins where paid for by Jesus on the Cross and have been washed in his perfect blood.
When we come before God in our desperation we must be honest with God on how we see the situation.
2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.
3 The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.
4 Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.
7 But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house. I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you.
Pslam
He has just talked about how God can have nothing to do with the boastful and evil. Then he points to himself and how God has shown him an abundance of steadfast love.
As you look to your relationship with God. I am sure you could describe it the same way. That God has shown you and abundance of his steadfast love.
Think of times he has done something in your life that only he could do.
But even if that was not the case the fact of him just dying on the cross for our sins we could describe him that way.
Notice David has a fear of God.
This is not a fear of I am afraid of you. This is a fear that leads to worship.
Many our times have lost a healthy fear before the Lord. This is why many don’t confess sin anymore. This is why many feel they can apporach Jesus in worship how they see fit without confess.
Isiah 6
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,
David had an awe of God that many in our day are missing.
8 Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me.
9 For there is no truth in their mouth; their inmost self is destruction; their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongue.
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out, for they have rebelled against you.
Psalm 5:8-1
Notice after David shares his heart. What does he ask God to do. To lead Him.
This is the picture we get in psalm 23.
We must as sheep be willing to follow our Shepherd King Jesus.
David understood that if he was going to see the light at the end of the tunnel. If he was going to finish the race. If He was going to make it through this situation He had to follow Jesus.
This is so simple but yet so hard. We know the answer to the situation that lays before us. Just follow Jesus. And yet I don’t know about you but self gets in the way. Worry gets in the way. Fear gets in the way.
The reason David could follow Jesus is because David had a bigger fear of not following Jesus then whatever laid before him.
If we will follow Jesus he will make our paths straight.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
The secret to that mountain moving in your life is this. call out to God share him your heart, then follow what God tells you.
11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you.
12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord; you cover him with favor as with a shield.
David then tells us that all you follow Gods lead. All who take refuge in him and trust him can rejoice.
We can rejoice because the victory has already be won. It was won on the cross 2000 years ago.
Out of our rejoicing it should lead us to sing.
Did you know that singing is not optional in the church and for the Christ follower. We are commanded to sing.
We should also have a desire to sing. Out of the victory of Jesus on the cross and what he has done for us it should lead us to sing.
I think of being in college after a Basketball victory especailly a big one we would sing our schools song. If you go to Carolina game or state game they sing out of joy of the victory.
In the church we should sing out of joy as well.
David finishes this prayer asking God to cover Him with Gods favor. Is this not what we want in our lives. Gods favor.
David could pray this because he had worshipped God, he had cried out to God, he had followed God, and he had sung out of joy of God vicotry and now he could expect Gods favor.
