AN UNDOCUMENTED PRIEST

SALEM (שָׁלֵם, shalem). Melchizedek’s city—probably another name for Jerusalem (Gen 14:18; Heb 7:1–2; compare Psa 76:2). Salem was probably near the Valley of Shaveh (Gen 14:17). According to Josephus, the Jews believed Salem to be the same as Jerusalem (Antiquities 1.10.2). This identification of Salem with Jerusalem was accepted by the Targums and the early Christians. Samaritans have always identified Salem with Salim, east of Nablus. Jewish and Christian tradition is more likely correct.

Jesus came to establish a kingdom connection
Jesus came to fulfill prophecy, but not to establish an earthly Kingship

A PECULIAR PRIEST

This prayer for the Davidic king typologically portrays the glory of the ultimate Davidic King, the Messiah. He is a Lord above even His father David (Matt. 22:41–46) and a priest though not of the Levitical line (Ps. 110:4; Heb. 7:11–28). He is victor over all His enemies

King of righteousness
King of Salem
King of Peace
Resembling the Son of God

A RESPECTED PRIEST

Levi’s connection to receiving a tenth
Levi’s credit to giving a tenth through Abraham
