What is the worst job you’ve ever worked?
Trailer hitches. Guidance counselor/computer print out of careers...
What does the world say your purpose should be?
Meanwhile…we are to follow your dreams, heart, success but what happens when work (and money) is in the way?
How does the world view work (chore); what’s the world’s attitude towards work?

Our view of work should be different

It’s not a result of sin.
Genesis 2:15 ESV
The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
Genesis 3:17–19 ESV
And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Original sin didn’t burden us with work but turned work into a burden. Sin sours our attitude towards work.
Original sin brought a dissatisfaction to work, laziness, and discontentment
Ecclesiastes 2:24 ESV
There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God,
Gen 3:17
Even more sneaky, original sin brought identity to work (not only that but play too) Pastor/waiter

Our typical effort should be different

First, not lazy.
2 Thessalonians 3:10–11 ESV
For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies.
Second, skilled
Proverbs 22:29 ESV
Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.
Psalm 127:1 ESV
Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.

Our work and calling should work together

Are you open to the mission of God?
Psalm 127:1 ESV
Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
Isaiah 6:8 ESV
And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”
Are you working on what God wants? Do you understand God’s important role in your work?
(need for recognition)
Psalm 127:1 ESV
Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
1 Corinthians 7:17 ESV
Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches.
1 Corinthians 7:17–18 ESV
Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches. Was anyone at the time of his call already circumcised? Let him not seek to remove the marks of circumcision. Was anyone at the time of his call uncircumcised? Let him not seek circumcision.
Who you work for, how you work, and what you work for is different that the world.
Colossians 3:23–24 ESV
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Practical things to do to remind yourself of your different calling....
If you feel sluggish, lazy, or depressed, imitate someone that’s not. Dress like you love your work. Act like you love your boss until you realize that your boss is Jesus and He created you for work...WORK FOR JESUS
Second, let your work be your calling until you find out differently. Cut grass, crunch spreadsheets, teach kids, negotiate contracts, and tell people about Jesus. TELL PEOPLE ABOUT YOUR BOSS
