How many of us in the room have ever been fed up? There’s a breaking point that happens for all of us that causes us to realize that there is better for us and we are driven to find that better! Today we take a look at two such people in the Gospels that come in contact with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Two people make the decision that they are fed up with being less than, they make the decision to be made whole. The title for this lesson today is “I Want To Be Made Whole”.
We catch up to Jesus in the Gospels shortly after healing the demon possessed man who was living among the dead. Jesus sends the demons into a herd of pigs and then heads back to the other side of the sea of Galilee to Capernaum. The same place he had just recently shared a parable about the different type of seeds and how they would receive the word of God. Matthews account tells us this was the moment in which he was converted as he sat discussing fasting with the Pharisees. Let us turn our hearts to the Gospel of .
A Panicked Father
A Panicked Father
21 When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea.
mark
22 Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet
Not all leaders/people of the Temple rejected Jesus
He falls prostrate at his feet
This would not have been a popular thing to do.
This shows his desperation
mark 5 22-
23 and begged him repeatedly, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.” 24 So he went with him. And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him.
mark 5
Matthews account states that she was already dead but in Mark she is at the point of death. ABOUT TO DIE
We all have faced, are facing, or will face things dying in our lives. But we will not all ask Jesus to fix those things!
This man believes that Jesus can and WILL heal his daughter!
This man shows his faith by following Jesus!
Those Pesky Interruptions!
Those Pesky Interruptions!
25 Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years.
12 years (Biblical Numerology
Points to the government or structure of God.
The hemorrhages would have made her a social outcast.
No friends for fear of making them unclean.
No opportunity to worship God.
This is like a commercial coming on during the best scene of a TV show. But not just any commercial, it’s the kind that feed your need to feel sympathy so you can’t feel bad for not wanting to pay attention to it! Jairus had an urgent need but it was about to be interrupted! This woman was fed up!
26 She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse.
Not only was she an outcast but she went through hell physically!
She also spent all she had on doctors
And on top of that her situation kept getting worse!
27 She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
She got word of Jesus from others who had already heard from Him!
MESSAGE!
28 for she said, “If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.”
Matthew and Luke add the detail that she said that if she could just touch the fringe of his garment
She knew that if she could just graze his clothing, not even a social interaction, she would be alright!
Dr’s had not worked, she was broke, and she kept getting worse!
Some of us have tried every avenue except Jesus!
The word for well/whole is the same word used for salvation BTW.
29 Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.
mark 5 29
When she touched the garment (made contact with Jesus) her problem was fixed right away!
Have you made contact with Jesus?
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
30 Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?”
mark 5 30
46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; for I noticed that power had gone out from me.”
Jesus knew something special had just happened.
31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 He looked all around to see who had done it.
31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
Even so, as Augustine long ago said, multitudes still come similarly close to Christ in the means of grace, but all to no purpose, being only sucked into the crowd. The voluntary, living contact of faith is that electric conductor which alone draws virtue out of Him. (JFB Commentary)
There will be a lot of us who will hear about Jesus and show interest and be pulled into the group of those that are ONLY interested. It may be something to do, coming to worship on Sunday and Bible class on Wednesday. But until you engage with Jesus in FAITH you will never experience the miraculous!
33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth.
47 When the woman saw that she could not remain hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before him, she declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed.
She was deathly afraid and trembling. She knew she had come into contact with someone that was not merely human. So she did what one does when in the presence of God, she came clean about everything!
34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
Once she confessed everything about what she had done, Jesus’ response was to let her know that her FAITH made her well/WHOLE (SAVED HER) If you want to be made whole, it STARTS with faith!
Why Bother?
Why Bother?
35 While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”
Some folks will only go as far as their hope goes.
They put a limit on Jesus because they never had faith in him in the first place.
V36
Jesus understand that the heart of a person can be discouraged, especially by those that are peers. His response...
“Do not fear, only believe.”
There are two sides to the unknown.
Fear- The irrational anxiety associated with the unknown especially without God.
I’m not sure what that noise was on the other side of the house, but it PROBABLY is the killer from the movie I just watched.
Faith- The assurance that the irrational is made rational with God.
I’m not sure what that noise was but I know God’s got me, even if I go check it out.
Jesus is telling the man, “I know it is easy to be afraid when you do not know what is about to happen, but I am LIFE so with me your daughter can’t be DEAD!”
37 He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.
mark 5 37
The inner circle… P,J, & J
38 When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 When he had entered, he said to them, “Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.”
mark 5 38-
These folks were losing it!
But the verb that describes Jesus looking at them is key.
It describes Jesus as looking at them intently as if he is looking at something unusual!
Jesus must have been like “They must haven’t heard about the legion yet...”
mark 5 40
40 And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was.
He could not do his work in this room full of unbelievers.
This reminds me of his return to his hometown.
lk 4 24
24 And he said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s hometown.
23 He said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Doctor, cure yourself!’ And you will say, ‘Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.’ ” 24 And he said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s hometown. 25 But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land;
lk
41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha cum,” which means, “Little girl, get up!”
Jesus spoke with care to the little girl with a calm spirit! And we need to go get Jesus to speak to the dead things in our lives to be made whole again!
Finances, GET UP!
Our marriage, GET UP!
My children, GET UP!
My church, GET UP!
42 And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement.
mark 5 42
Not only was she revived but she was BETTER!
She was walking around!
12 is mentioned again showing a connection to the bleeding woman. God’s government is at work here!
43 He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
Jesus ordered that no one mention what had happened
Jesus wants you based on you not circumstances...
Conclusion
Conclusion
We must realize the power of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ! He can take what is dying/dead and improve upon it! He can take what is hopeless and bring back hope! Do you want to be made whole today? It starts with FAITH! Be WHOLE! Be SAVED!
