Chapter 10 as a continuation.
Chapter 10 as a continuation.
Overview.
He has healed a Blind man.
The blind man has been healed of his physical blindness.
The Pharisees throw the blind man out because he has affirmed JESUS as a prophet.
Jesus graciously finds the blind man having been thrown out and heals his spiritual blindness.
The Pharisees have a problem with that.
is an illustration of their false teaching,
revealed the problem. illustrates why the problem exists.
So Jesus begins.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber.
Jesus is a great teacher.
\]NBB icture here.

Great teachers use word pictures to illustrate whats going on.
Jesus uses a relevant picture here of a herd of sheep. Keep in mind tending sheep is one of the most frequently talked about positions and job in Scripture.
Think of the shepherds Scripture mentions.
Abel-shepherd.
Abraham- a shepherd.
Moses- a Shepherd.
David- A shepherd.
Amos- A Shepherd.
Shepherds were among those first told about the Messiah’s coming.
Shepherding was a common job but it was an arduous job.
Jesus’s illustration draws upon the people’s understanding of shepherding as a common position.
A couple of things you should know about sheep herding in this day.
Often times there a holding place normally enclosed with rocks or fencing, s that the sheep would not get out and so that other things could not get in.
The Shepherd would come during the day and lead the sheep out and in. Once all the sheep were herded, the shepherd would retire to his home for the night leaving the gatekeeper there for night shift.
With that said, lets look at verse 1.
Very simple picture.
The shepherd came through the door, those unauthorized wouldn’t use the door. Any one not using the door had bad intentions for the sheep.
Stealing sheep, killing sheep for menace.
Illustrate: climbing a fence into a field
On the other hand, the shepherd is authorized to use the door.
“But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep.
He has no reason to climb in another way. He is the shepherd.
He has full authorization.
I don’t climb through the windows of my own house.
I go through the door.
“To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
To Him the doorkeeper opens.
The doorkeeper doesn’t open for anyone. If he did, he would be fired. The whole purpose of him being a doorkeeper is to keep the door.
He lets the shepherds in, and no one else.
“To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
“When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.
And here is where we learn to things about the relationship of the sheep with the Shepherd.
The Sheep are Intimately known.
The Sheep are Intimately known.
The Sheep hear His voice.
Then the
More than one flock.
His sheep hear His voice.
Spoiler alert: Jesus isn’t giving us a lesson in Sheep herding for no reason.
This is spiritual.
His sheep hear his voice. These Jews do not.
But their minds were hardened; for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant the same veil remains unlifted, because it is removed in Christ. But to this day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their heart; but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
We should also state here that the people who hear his voice are those who are of his fold. They are his sheep.
“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
And He was saying, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
“If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”
‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’
This isn’t a foreign concept to Scripture.
The sheep of God listen to his voice.
People that don’t want to hear. That do not listen.
This is evidence that they are not of God’s fold.
2. He calls His sheep. Again, this is not a new concept in Scripture. It is a spiritual truth.
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,
seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.
God calls.
But he doesn’t just call.
3. He calls us by name.
The Shepherd knows His sheep intimately.
He knows them by name.
They aren’t just sheep.
They are His sheep.
Again, this isn’t a foreign concept to Scripture.
But now, thus says the Lord, your Creator, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
The Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing of which you have spoken; for you have found favor in My sight and I have known you by name.”
Isn’t it wonderful that our God knows our name.
He knows His sheep intimately.
It makes sense that he would know your name.
“The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up out of the abyss and go to destruction. And those who dwell on the earth, whose name has not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, will wonder when they see the beast, that he was and is not and will come.
Revelation tells us that our names are written before the foundation of the world.
All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain.
‘He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.
His sheep follow Him alone.
His sheep follow Him alone.
“When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. “A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them.
“When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. “A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.”
Couple things here
John
1. The people of God listen to the voice of God.
Hearing vs. Listening
As sheep are dependent upon the voice of the Shepherd, so too the people of God are dependent upon the voice of God.
The People of God listen to the voice of God.
They desire to hear the voice of God.
Because they know where he is leading them is good.
2. The people of God do not listen to the voice of a stranger.
This encourages me.
The true sheep of God will not listen to the voice of the stranger.
They will not be led finally and fully astray.
Because they know what the true master’s voice sounds like.
These Jews are not His sheep.
These Jews are not His sheep.
This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them.
What type of understanding hear is he speaking of? Because the picture isn’t one that would be foreign.
They knew what he was saying physically, they didn’t understand the intended meaning.
and He just got through telling us why.
These Pharisees are not His sheep so they don’t understand.
In fact, this is the purpose of Parables in general.
And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” Jesus answered them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. “For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him. “Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
Parables reveal who Jesus is and they reveal who his sheep are.
His sheep hear understand and submit.
Those who are not do not hear, do not understand and continue in their rebellion.
Jesus doesn’t stop speaking in parables because they don’t understand. He does this because he knows his sheep will hear.
He continues.
And here we have common theme in the book of John. an I am statement.
I am the bread of life.
I am the Light of the World.
I am the door.
Next, week I am the good shepherd.
So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. “All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.
Jesus again speaking of a spiritual reality.
He is the only way to to enter the flock of God.
He is the door.
It is only through and by Christ that we are saved.
Every other way leads to death.
and Those who lead you that way are thieves and robbers.
but the true sheep do not hear them.
He is referencing these Jewish leaders who, for a long time now, have done everything but be good shepherds of the flock.
Turn with me in your Bibles to .
And Jesus does just that.
“I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
Note the contrast here.
A true shepherd (the true shepherd) is there for his sheep.
The thieves and the robbers are there for themselves.
TO STEAL , TO KILL, TO DESTROY.
Its only through the door that we are saved.
Its there we find green pastures and restoration of our soul according to .
And we will find out more about that good shepherd.
while it is said, “Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts, as when they provoked Me.”
