THE FORGOTTEN MEMBER OF THE TRINITY
The Problem in Studying The Holy Spirit:
There are two extremes in dealing with the Holy Spirit.
Charismatics and Fundamentalist
God’s Spirit In the Old Testament
Israel was learning to embrace monotheism over polytheism; thus, emphasizing the character and activity of the one true God was more important than distinguishing identities within God
There are hints of the Holy Spirit as a Person in the OT
Israel was learning to embrace monotheism over polytheism; thus, emphasizing the character and activity of the one true God was more important than distinguishing identities within God
The New Testament makes it abundantly clear that the Spirit has personality.
He is not an impersonal force.
The first thing that we should notice is the use of masculine pronouns in speaking of the Spirit.
Second, the Spirit speaks to people.
Third, the Spirit helps with our Prayers.
Fourth, it is possible to lie to the Holy Spirit.
Fifth, it is possible to grieve the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit is really the main person in the book of Acts (Peter and Paul notwithstanding).
