THE SERMON BODY
Which traditions should we kill? Which should we die for? How do we know?
Why do you do what you do?
Matthew 15:1–2 NIV
1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”
tradition
ritual cleanliness = cleanliness - godliness
good hygiene = wisdom
FOTR - why do we do this, I will tell you, I don’t know!
Jesus = Not the issue!!!
Matthew 15:10–11 ESV
10 And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand: 11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”
Matthew 15:11 NIV
11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”
Matt 15.10-11
Why do you do what you do?
Matt 15:
Matthew 15:3 NIV
3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?
Commandment / tradition
are we giving weight to the weighty things!?
Commandment - of God
tradition - of men
Define Commandment
God Given
Psalm 19:7–11 ESV
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; 8 the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9 the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
Ps 19
2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Hebrews 4:12 ESV
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
H
2 Peter 1:19–21 ESV
19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
2 Pet 1:19-
Thus says the LORD
Define Tradition
accepted by man
1 Corinthians 10:23 ESV
23 “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.
invented by man
change / evolve / adapt
why do you do what you do…? … what weight do you give these?
What God says
Matt 15:
Matthew 15:4 NIV
4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’
No loopholes
what you believe about God and His Word matters
do you believe?...
Gods Word is Authoritative
Gods Word is Inerrant
Gods Word is Infallible
do you believe?...
gods word is ....
What man says
Matthew 15:5 ESV
5 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,”
Matt 15:
Matthew 15:5–6 ESV
5 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” 6 he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.
Matthew 15:5–6 NIV
5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
The tradition of
Convenient
Cultural
What are some culturally convenient conundrums we face today?
homosexuality
women in ministry
abortion
politics
impurity

Nullify / VOID = take away the authority of
John 1:1 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
what have we done!?
what has church become?
are we practicing “religion”?
God’s Word matters!!!!
measuring rod
authority
practice
etc...
Some traditions do not matter!
church splits / fights...
What God will do
Matthew 15:1–9 NIV
1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!” 3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: 8 “ ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’”
Matthew 15:7–9 NIV

VAIN = to no end / in worthlessness
the vanity of traditionalism for traditions sake
1 John 2:3 ESV
3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.
Tradition Alone = Hell
1 Jhn
1 John 5:2 ESV
2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.

Know the difference by His Word
Jeremiah 7:23 ESV
23 But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’
CONCLUSION
FOTR - Tevye
Don’t introduce new material.
narrow the focus don’t expand it.
Because of our traditions, every one of us knows who he is and what God expects him to do. Without our traditions our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof.
Clinch the goal.
Give concrete applications.
Jeremiah 7:23 ESV
23 But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’
Goal
Where are you most tempted to serve/obey mans traditions rather then Gods commands?
Application
Repent! / Change!
