The verb ‘building’ which is participle means ‘he was engaged in building’. It seems Cain began the building of the city and ended up wandering. Eventually it was the son, Enoch who took on the project and hence the name of it as well.

Lamech appears to be bragging will great self-assurance of something he is sure to do. Not that he has done it.

It would seem time has made out Cain to be a hero among his descendants. In Lamech’s boast, he compares levers himself above Cain.

NT Connection: Jesus said to forgive this number of times.

This is also the number for the “times of the Gentiles”.

II. Seth’s Legacy

Cain’s lineage was

Seth’s lineage was the sons of God.

We have here an account of the commencement of that worship of God which consists in prayer, praise, and thanksgiving, or in the acknowledgment and celebration of the mercy and help of Jehovah. While the family of Cainites, by the erection of a city, and the invention and development of worldly arts and business, were laying the foundation for the kingdom of this world; the family of the Sethites began, by united invocation of the name of God of grace, to found and to erect the kingdom of God.

Cain’s Legacy was earthly in value. His sons gloried in man.

Seth’s legacy was one of spiritual in value. His sons were those who were known by their God.
