knowing his time had come to die, and leave his disciples, Jesus made a concerted effort to express his love for them
recorded in
13:1: “he loved them to the end”
for all eternity
for all of their lives
with all of his love
Jesus expressed the fullness of his love by:
by washing their feet
being a Christ follower is being a servant illustrated in their Lord and Teacher washing their feet (13:4-20)
by letting them know he would be leaving them (13:31-35)
in his absence they were to love one another as he had loved them (illustrated in serving one another)
by telling them he would return for them
he was going away to prepare rooms for them in the Father’s house (14:1-11)
by encouraging them with the promise of fruitful labour (14:12-14)
Jesus promised to answer all their prayers in their work for him
by promising another helper
the Spirit of truth to dwell in them and be with them (14:15-17) and teach them all things and bring to their minds all that Jesus said to them (14:26)
he expressed his great love by making them many promises
you will be blessed if you do what I have commanded (13:17)
Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
you will follow afterward (13:36)
since I go to prepare a place for you I will come again and take you to myself (14:2-3; 18)
they would do greater works than Jesus’ (14:12)
whatever you ask in doing these greater works Jesus will do for them (14:13-14)
the giving of another helper just like Jesus (14:16)
the giving of the Spirit of Truth (14:17)
because I live you will live (14:19)
loved by the Father and Jesus (14:21a)
Jesus reveals himself to them (14:21b)
he expressed his amazing love for them by encouraging and exhorting them
you are clean (13:10)
you should serve one another (13:15)
you should love one another (13:34)
you should not be troubled, I go to prepare a place for you (14:1-4)
I am the way, truth and life (14:6)
to know God is to know me (14:7)
we can expect to receive all that we need to do the work of Christ (14:13-14)
proof of love for Christ is obedience (14:15)
indwelling of HS for true believers (14:16-17)
this morning we will consider Jesus’ expressing his love through the promise of the Holy Spirit
Another Helper
Another Helper
in v.16 Jesus promised his disciples “another Helper” who would be with them forever
“another” means something of the same kind
Jesus had been with them 24 hrs/day, 7 days/wk, 365 days/yr for 3 yrs
all during that time Jesus had protected them, encouraged them, taught them, rebuked them, disciplined them, helped them ...
they had come to love him as their Lord and Master, their Friend and Teacher, their God and Saviour
now Jesus is about to leave them, but not alone
another helper, one just like him, will be given to them (v16)
another helper, one just like Jesus, will be given to them (v16)
and this Helper, the Spirit of truth would be in them forever (vv.16-17)
because he knew all things not being physically present with them did not hinder him but his disciples would have lacked the comforting assurance of his presence
they were understandably fearful, worried, frustrated, anxious
he would never leave nor forsake them!
never again will they be alone!
what we learn from this:
the gift of the HS is the same as having the Lord Jesus Christ!
is the same as having the Lord Jesus Christ!
every true believer has the Triune God within them
I and the Father are one.”
to have Christ is to have the Father and to have the Father is to have Christ
for
“ ‘In him we live and move and have our being’;
as even some of your own poets have said,
“ ‘For we are indeed his offspring.’
And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women.
For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
Acts 17:4
the fullness of the Father dwelt within the Lord Jesus and Jesus gives the HS to every believer
that HS is just like Jesus
“to be with you forever” (v16) & “he dwells with you and will be in you” (v17b)
when the Father sends the HS to live within the believer, he never leaves
5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
once the Father sends the HS to live within the believer, that HS is there forever, he will never leave us
puts to rest the foolish notion that a true believer can lose their salvation
because saving grace is a sovereign gift of God, and God does not change his mind, and he is all powerful, all knowing and everywhere present we have full assurance that when he chooses to save a sinner it is forever!
can have full assurance of life eternal!
God’s gift of salvation can never be lost
just as Jesus is the exact representation of God so the indwelling HS is all that Jesus is
just as Jesus is the exact representation of God so the indwelling HS is all that Jesus is
to have the HS is to have Christ and to have Christ is to have the Father!
for this reason Jesus said in ,
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
knowing this Jesus expressed his love for them by spending much time at the Last Supper teaching and reassuring his disciples
during that time he demonstrated his amazing love for them
a love that was for all of their lives on earth, all of eternity, and to the fullness of his capacity
Jesus came to them after his resurrection and appeared to them over a period of 40 days
at the end of those 40 days Jesus ascended into heaven never to be seen again
Jesus promised them in that while he was with the Father that he would be preparing rooms for them and would come again to bring them home to be with him
he demonstrated that amazing love by washing their feet
the result of the promise of the never leaving HS!
though Jesus will leave them they are not going to be left as orphans because one just like Jesus, another Helper, the Spirit of Truth will come to live in them forever
he would demonstrate the fullness of his love by dying in their place on the cross
Jesus came to them through gift of the HS
he would continue to demonstrate that love through the indwelling HS
Jesus will come to them when they die
Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Cor 5:8)
example: Jesus standing to receive Stephen (Acts 7:55)
he promised to demonstrated that love by coming back for them
separation is temporary
he expressed his amazing love for them by teaching them
words
you are clean (13:10)
Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
Jesus’ explanation of this in 16:19-22
John 16:19-
19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’?
20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.
22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.
24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
while those who hated Jesus rejoiced the disciples would weep and lament his death
the disciples were the only ones who were alone
however Jesus’ disciples will see him when he rises from the dead on the 3rd day
no other believer will experience this separation
but their sorrow would turn to joy
happened when Jesus appeared to them after being raised from the dead
in the meantime they will have the indwelling HS
Jesus’ encouragement: “because I live, you will live”
because Jesus will be raised from the dead those who are in him will also be raised
you should serve one another (13:15)
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
before God saved us we were dead in sin ()
God saved us by baptizing us into the death of Christ
we died with Christ and were raised with him
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
we are possessors of eternal life right now through God’s Spirit who dwells in us and will never leave us
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,
5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
you should love one another (13:34)
11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ,
12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.
13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,
14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
here we get into mystery!
John 14:
Jesus has already told his disciples that he would ask the Father to give them the HS to live within them forever (v.16-17)
the result: peace with him, a new life, communion and fellowship with Christ through the indwelling HS, fellowship with all who are in Christ, the sure expectation of heaven
the Spirit of the living God eternally dwells within the believer
here in v.20 Jesus adds another dimension of our union with God
“you in me, and I in you”
the believer is united with Christ
“I am in my Father” ( - I and the Father are one)
through Christ the believer is in the Father
they have the promise of Jesus’ return for them
you should not be troubled, I go to prepare a place for you (14:1-4)
I am the way, truth and life (14:6)
to know God is to know me (14:7)
while away Jesus is preparing rooms for them in his Father’s house
we can expect to receive all that we need to do the work of Christ (14:13-14)
proof of love for Christ is obedience (14:15)
indwelling of HS for true believers (14:16-17)
blessed are you if you do what Christ has commanded (13:17)
For Whom Are These Benefits and Promises?
For Whom Are These Benefits and Promises?
paragraph begins with a cause and effect statement:
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
stated slightly differently in v.21
21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
repeated again in v.23,
Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
you have heard of the hymn, “Trust and Obey”
in John’s writings loving and obeying Jesus is the definition of a true Christian
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.
Jesus’ amazing love and the benefits of his love are only for those who love him and keep his commandments
Jesus’ amazing love and the benefits of his amazing love are only for those who love him and keep his commandments
true Christians are those who love and obey Jesus
6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.
8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.
9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.
Jn 17:6-9
I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.
many of you know the hymn, “Trust and Obey”
verse 4 goes like this:
But we never can prove
The delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay,
For the favour He shows
And the joy He bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey,
Trust and obey -
For there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus
But to trust and obey
Jesus says to all who want to experience him and his love, we must love and obey and obey him
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.
this was Jesus’ own attitude and behaviour in relation to God
7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’ ”
31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
49 For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak.
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
men look on the action to determine whether the heart is right
17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.
men look on the action to determine whether the heart is right
there are many reasons for obedience besides love
fear, coercion, tradition,
problem: it is possible to obey without loving the Lord Jesus
they are the ones at the judgment who will say “lord, lord” and Jesus will respond, “I never knew you”
the scriptures give us many pictures of what true salvation looks like so that we may compare ourselves and have assurance
God looks on the heart to determine whether the action is right
one of those pictures is love and obedience
do you love Jesus? are you willing to sacrifice yourself for him? are you willing to give up what the world offers to have Christ?
why love of Jesus is important
why love of Jesus is important
John 14:21b
And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.
If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come!
do you obey Jesus?
is Jesus your Lord and Master? do you consider yourself his slave and live like it?
why obedience is key
1 John 2:
3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
though they cannot follow where Jesus is going they are not being abandoned like orphans
for those who love and obey Jesus:
John 14:21b
21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
separation is temporary
And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.
in the meantime they will have the indwelling HS
And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.
they have the promise of Jesus’ return for them
while away Jesus is preparing rooms for them in his Father’s house
Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
when Jesus dies on the cross those who have no saving faith will consider him dead and gone
however Jesus’ disciples will see him when he rises from the dead on the 3rd day
because Jesus will be raised from the dead those who are in him will also be raised
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Rom
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
Col 2:11-
In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.
the result of being raised with Christ is reconciliation with God resulting in peace with him, a new life, communion and fellowship with Christ through the indwelling HS, fellowship with all who are in Christ, the sure expectation of heaven
In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
John 14:
being raised to newness of life will bring with it a limited understanding of Christ’s union with the Father and of our union with Christ
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
this section ends the same way it began in v15
obedience to Christ is a key indicator of union with Christ
disobedience is not compatible with saving faith
Jesus is Lord: he is the Master, we are his slaves, we exist to do his will
in doing so we put to death the desires of our sinful flesh and mind
