Genesis: An Introduction and Commentary Vision, Foreboding and Wrestling (32:1–32)
The sequence of chapters 32, 33, culminating in 35:1–15, acts out powerfully the principles of Matthew 5:23–25a.
From Jacob to Israel
Illus: Pilgrim’s Progress—Christian. Salvation moment. Then an Aha moment. Process of Sanctification. Jacob has been exiled and has been living a life dependent on scheming and deceit. But the Lord has appeared to him and made it clear that it was not Jaco’s schemes but God’s providence and mercy; His Blessings that have been with Jacob.
Illustration: compartmentalize our lives. What happens though is our spiritual compartment always becomes the smallest and most neglected part.
That’s why so many people are looking for miracles instead of realizing the power of Christ that is within us.
“We are constantly looking for people and things other than God and his glory to satisfy us, to give us what we want. To give us what we think we need. We are looking for signs and consequently missing the truth that we already have what the signs have been pointing to all along.”
We think, if I just try hard enough, if I do well enough, if I just accomplish this or achieve that, then I will finally be satisfied. And it never works.
Life and godliness come though knowing Jesus.
A part from God’s power, there is no Christian life.
When we feel lacking in our life we need to realize it’s not because we haven’t tapped into our inner power. In fact we feel that way because we are trying to do something that we cannot do.
The key to living an empowered life is acknowledging that we don’t have what it takes.
Your time in the Bible is the primary means by which the Holy Spirit empowers you to live a holy life.
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob all have similarities to their stories.
Exiled, Oppression, Deceit, Barreness, but also Blessed and Highly Favored.
Abram to Abraham
