Peacemakers release tension; they don't intensify it.
Peacemakers seek solutions and find no delight in arguments.
Peacemakers calm the waters; they don't trouble them.
Peacemakers work hard to keep an offense from occurring. And if it has occurred, they strive for resolution.
Peacemakers lower their voice rather than raise their voice.
Peacemakers generate light not heat.

The Meaning of Peace

Righteousness

Definition of Peace

In classical Greek a “peacemaker” was an ambassador sent to entreat for peace (cp Paul's description in -note) and was sometimes used to describe a strong rulers who establishes peace by force.

Purity

James 3:17 HCSB
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without favoritism and hypocrisy.

Truth

Matthew 10:34–36 HCSB
Don’t assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household.
Matthew 10:34 HCSB
Don’t assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

Jim Walton was translating the NT for the Muinane people of La Sabana in the jungles of Colombia. But he was having trouble with the word peace. During this time, Fernando, the village chief, was promised a 20-minute plane ride to a location that would have taken him 3 days to travel by walking. The plane was delayed in arriving at La Sabana, so Fernando departed on foot. When the plane finally came, a runner took off to bring Fernando back. But by the time he had returned, the plane had left. Fernando was livid because of the mix-up. He went to Jim and launched into an angry tirade. Fortunately, Walton had taped the chief's diatribe. When he later translated it, he discovered that the chief kept repeating the phrase, "I don't have one heart. " Jim asked other villagers what having "one heart " meant, and he found that it was like saying, "There is nothing between you and the other person. " That, Walton realized, was just what he needed to translate the word peace. To have peace with God means that there is nothing--no sin, no guilt, no condemnation--that separates us.

Endeavors to find a point of agreement

English dictionaries define peacemakers as those who make establish or make peace especially by reconciling

In the early 1990s, gang violence erupted in Boyle Heights, a section of East Los Angeles. Eight gangs were in conflict in the parish around the Dolores Mission Catholic Church. Killings and injuries happened daily. A group of women who met for prayer read together the story of Jesus walking on water...Then one of the mothers, electrified by the text, began to identify the parallels between the Jesus story and her own... That night, seventy women began...a procession from one barrio to another. They brought food, guitars, and love. As they ate chips and salsa and drank Cokes with gang members, [they began to sing traditional songs together]. The gangs were disoriented, baffled; the war zones were silent. Each night the mothers walked. By nonviolently intruding and intervening, they "broke the rules of war."

The old script of retaliation and escalating violence was challenged and changed. It is no accident that the women christened their nighttime journeys "love walks."As the relationships between the women and the gang members grew, the kids told their stories. Anguish over lack of jobs; rage over the hopelessness of poverty. Together they developed a tortilla factory, a bakery, a child-care center, a job-training program, a class on conflict-resolution techniques, a school for further learning, a neighborhood group to monitor and report police misbehavior, and more.

And it began with the challenge "Get out of the boat" and "walk on water."
