SERIES: THE HOLY SPIRIT!!!
Who is the Holy Spirit?
,
INTRO: Tonight we are going to begin a series of messages on the Holy Spirit. We are heading towards Pentecost Sunday on May 20th. As Pentecostals I believe it is important for us to understand the basis of our beliefs in the Holy Spirit. Not only will we be looking at our beliefs, but even some views of the Holy Spirit from other points of view. The study of the Holy Spirit is important - and many people are interested.
Spirit. We are heading towards Pentecost Sunday on May 20th. While we are Pentecostals I believe it is important for us to understand the basis of our beliefs in the Holy Spirit. Not only will we be looking at our beliefs, but even some views of the Holy Spirit from other points of view. The study of the Holy Spirit is important - and many people are interested.
(Notes Derived from Systematic Theology 3 @ Southern Seminary with Dr. Gregg Allison)
A proper understanding of the Holy Spirit is critical for many things.
A proper understanding of the Holy Spirit is critical for many things.
o Our understanding of salvation.
o Our grasp of assurance of salvation.
o Understanding of perseverance.
o Our sanctification (we can’t mature without the Holy Spirit).
o Reading Scripture.
o Praying. ()
o Understanding and following God’s Will.
o Exercising Spiritual Gifts.

4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me;
5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”
7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
TITLE & PRAYER (Who is the Holy Spirit?)
There are divisions within the Church today over the Holy Spirit, more specifically the Holy Spirit Baptism. As a matter of face deep divisions exist. Let’s take a quick look at the different movements & views of the Holy Spirit.
1) Pentecostals/charismatics
(First Wave Movement) Beginning of 20th century – CA – Azusa Street Revival Pentecostal, Apostolic, Assemblies of God and other Pentecostal denominations have the origins or roots in this revival. The core belief is that the Baptism by or with the HS is a second blessing that takes place subsequent to salvation (seconds, minutes, hours, days …).
Pentecostals believe that speaking in tongues is a necessary manifestation of the Spirit Baptism. Pentecostals also believe that
miraculous gifts (all including sign gifts) are given and available and should be common place in the church (word of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healings, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues, interpretation of tongues).
(Second Wave) 1960s – Charismatics – enters mainstream churches
Michigan – Ann Harbor /South Bend Indiana/Ohio
Non-Pentecostals/charismatics
These believe that at the time of conversion – Jesus Baptizes the believer with the Holy Spirit to incorporate them into the Church.
They do not believe it is a subsequent event, but simultaneous with salvation and that Jesus does this. They also do not believe that tongues are a necessary sign of the Spirit Baptism. Many believe that speaking in tongues is a result of peer pressure or even demonic activity. They believe that there are no miraculous or sign gifts being distributed by the Holy Spirit to the Church today.
They don’t say that God can’t do miracles or healings. But if He does He does it Himself. In other words, we don’t have any bearing in whether or not a miracles takes place. They believe that miracles and signs were reserved for the early church to confirm the Gospel message and the Gospel messengers.-
(Third wave evangelicals) 1980’s – They embrace some theology of Pentecostalism, yet rejects others. It’s more of a “pick & choose” type of theology.
· From non-Pentecostal side
o They believe that Baptism of the Holy Spirit happens at
the moment of conversion to incorporate into Church
o They don’t believe that it’s necessarily accompanied by speaking in tongues (may & may not be)
· From the Pentecostal side
o They DO believe sign gifts are continued and should be common place
Tonight, let’s look to answer the question, “Who is the Holy Spirit?”
We see that there is a deep division among the Christian Church on how the Holy Spirit works today, but over the next few weeks we are going to seek to gather a biblical perspective on who He is, and how we relate to Him today … So, Who is the Holy Spirit?
First of all, we need to …
I) CONSIDER HIS PERSONALITY
I) CONSIDER HIS PERSONALITY
a) He understands all things. The Holy Spirit is omniscient (all-knowing, all-intelligent).
intelligent)
NKJV
10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
b) He can be grieved. He is sensitive to our actions, non-actions, & reactions.
NKJV
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
c) He exercises His will in gifting those who come to faith.
NKJV
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
So, the Holy Spirit exhibits intelligence, emotion, will. This is important because we often focus on His Power - He becomes an impersonal force, strength, or energy. But the Holy Spirit is a person. The third person of the Trinity. Further, we see that He:
d) He speaks, prays, teaches, bears witness. (; ; ; ; )
NKJV
29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and overtake this chariot.”
29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and overtake this chariot.”
NKJV
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the .
NKJV
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
NKJV
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.”
NKJV
16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
e) He is distinguished FROM His power.
e) He is distinguished FROM His power.
NKJV
38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
So, as we consider His personality, we also need to …
So, as we consider His personality, we also need to …
II) CONSIDER HIS DEITY
II) CONSIDER HIS DEITY
a) We see His Parallelism. (, ; )
Story of Annanias and Saphira –
NKJV
3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?
4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”
NKJV
NKJV
9 But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”
v. 3 – lied to the Holy Spirit
v. 3 – lied to the Holy Spirit
v. 4 – not to men, but to God (Parallelism – Holy Spirit is God)
v. 9 – Testing the Spirit of God
Further in:
NKJV
51 “You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.
Stephen said, “You always resist the Holy Spirit …” vv. 42, 45, 48 – speaking about the God of the Old Testament – He who is present now, is the same God that is the God of the Old Covenant.
Stephen said, “You always resist the Holy Spirit …” vv. 42, 45, 48 – speaking about the God of the Old Testament – He who is present now, is the same God that is the God of the Old Covenant.
In – David’s prayer of confession “Cast me not away from Your presence, nor take the Holy Spirit.” Parallelism = Holy Spirit is God.
We should not only consider these parallelisms but also we:
b) See His Divine attributes. (; ; ; ; ; )
NKJV
7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?
8 If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.
· So, we see that the Holy Spirit is omnipresent. He’s everywhere!
· So, we see that the Holy Spirit is omnipresent. He’s everywhere!
NKJV
13 Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord, Or as His counselor has taught Him?
14 With whom did He take counsel, and who instructed Him, And taught Him in the path of justice? Who taught Him knowledge, And showed Him the way of understanding?
NKJV
NKJV
NKJV
10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
· So, we see that the Holy Spirit is omniscient. He knows all things!
· So, we see that the Holy Spirit is omniscient. He knows all things!
NKJV
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
· We see that the Holy Spirit knows the future. Not limited by time.
· We see that the Holy Spirit knows the future. Not limited by time.
NKJV
35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
· So, we see that the Holy Spirit is omnipotent (the impossible is nothing to the Holy Spirit).
· So, we see that the Holy Spirit is omnipotent (the impossible is nothing to the Holy Spirit).
NKJV
14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
· So, we see that the Holy Spirit is eternal.
· So, we see that the Holy Spirit is eternal.
c) We can see His Divine works.
i) In creating and sustaining …
NKJV
2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
NKJV
13 By His Spirit He adorned the heavens; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent.

27 These all wait for You, That You may give them their food in due season.

5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;
20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,
21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

III) CONSIDER HIS RELATIONSHIP IN THE TRINITY
III) CONSIDER HIS RELATIONSHIP IN THE TRINITY
a) Look at His nature: ‘homoousios’ (meaning ‘same substance’)
We affirm with the early church – the He has the “same nature, essence as the Father and Son.”
There is no difference in His nature, or divine attributes. Yet, they are distinct as well (The Holy Spirit is not the Father or the Son.). The Holy Spirit eternal proceeds from the Father and the Son.
b) Look at His procession.
He is eternally from Father and Son (; ; ; ; )
[ILLUS: The Nicene-Constantinople Creed (381), Synod of Toledo (Spain, 589), (“We believe in the Holy Spirit who proceeds from the Father and the Son”).]
The procession is double and eternal. It does not mean that the Father and Son created the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit is eternal. He doesn’t receive His nature or deity from Father or the Son.
doesn’t receive His nature or deity from Father or the Son.
The Holy Spirit is ‘autotheos’ = He is ‘God of himself’ (all three person share in the one identical and undivided being of God; all three persons are fully and eternally divine). They grant the Holy Spirit His person – not His divinity
Why do we say we ‘AFFIRM’?
NKJV
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
The Father sends the Holy Spirit in name of Jesus.
The Father sends the Holy Spirit in name of Jesus.
Jesus sends the Holy Spirit from the Father and proceeds from the Father.
NKJV
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
Jesus sends the Holy Spirit.
NKJV
22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
NKJV
Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit on the disciples.
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
NKJV
NKJV
– Speaks of the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of God the Father, and the Spirit of the Son.
– Speaks of the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of God the Father, and the Spirit of the Son.
All of this is to highlight that the Holy Spirit is not a force, but a person. And we should treat Him as such … We should affirm our belief that He is a person, the third person of the Trinity!

CONCL: I realize this is a lot of information about the Holy Spirit to digest in one week, but I believe we need to have a better understanding of who He really is and what He desires to do in our lives.

Next week, we will see His working throughout the Bible and how that applies today.
God is with you wherever you go and in whatever you face in the person of the Holy Spirit. If you’re a Christian today, He is in you. Think about that - God is in you (en theos). That ought to excite/enthuse us. As Pentecostals we believe that there is an experience known as the Baptism in the Holy Spirit that is available to all followers of Jesus Christ! I pray if you have never been baptized in the Holy Spirit that you will begin to have a hunger and desire for this powerful and precious gift.
