Joshua commanded the people to fear the Lord (attitude of reverence), serve the Lord (proper action based on correct attitude), put away other gods (a natural consequence of a supernatural commitment), and serve the Lord (reiterated). :
Joshua commanded the people to choose: the Lord, the gods of their fathers beyond the river (Mesopotamia) and in Egypt, or the gods of the Amorites.
Joshua committed to serve the Lord and to lead his entire household that way.
