Presenting Ourselves before God

Joshua took the lead
All the people were gathered to Shechem
The Leaders were prominent: Elders, tribal heads, judges, officers
They took their stand (yazab hithpael)

They Reflected on God’s Goodness to Them

God’s Goodness Deserves a ‘From Now On’ Commitment

Joshua commanded the people to fear the Lord (attitude of reverence), serve the Lord (proper action based on correct attitude), put away other gods (a natural consequence of a supernatural commitment), and serve the Lord (reiterated). :
Joshua commanded the people to choose: the Lord, the gods of their fathers beyond the river (Mesopotamia) and in Egypt, or the gods of the Amorites.
Joshua committed to serve the Lord and to lead his entire household that way.

God’s People Committed to Serve Him

24:16-18 People: We will not forsake the Lord to serve other gods
24:19-20 Joshua: It is serious business to give lip service to God.
24:21 People: We will serve the Lord.
24:22 Joshua: You are witnesses against yourselves; the people agreed
24:23 Joshua: Put away foreign gods, and incline your heart to the Lord
24:24 People: We will serve the Lord our God and we will listen to His voice

The Deal is Sealed

24:25 A covenant was made before the Lord by Joshua and the people
24:26-27 The Book of the Law of God and a large stone of witness
24:28 The People were dismissed to their inheritance.
