Prayer
How does Jesus Christ living in us express itself in practice?
This is/should be the desire of all followers of Christ.
Put on the jersey means to play the game for one team
Our passage takes us there
Sins of sexual attitude and behavior, put to death: sexual immorality, impurity, dishonorable passions, evil desires, covetousness
Destructive to people, groups and churches.
Sins of speech, rid ourselves of: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from our mouths...
Relationship breakers
Why?
Because here (in the body of Christ) when we put off such practices our new self brings a radical change to human relationships.
We don’t want to destroy or breakdown,
Breaking down barriers (i.e. racial, religious, cultural, social) so the whole world will see the love of Christ through how we love Christ, each other, and those outside the church.
If you take something off, you have to put something back on. (ex. replacing a bad habit with a good habit)
This is where love comes back onto the scene and holds it all together.
How does Jesus Christ living in us express itself in practice?
[2-7]
Colossians 3:12–17 ESV
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

How does Jesus Christ living in us express itself in practice?
It may read nice and easy, but it’s not always a walk in the park.
Paul offers a strategy to help us live for God day by day.

ONE

How does Jesus Christ living in us express itself in practice? Imitate Christ’s compassionate, forgiving attitude
Colossians 3:12–13 ESV
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
Christians get hurt, oftentimes by other Christians. Why is it we so often allow others to drain the life out of us and leave us bitter?
I’ve walked in this in the past - Gripping tightly to a hurt when the other person has long since moved on.
It’s not easy to forgive - especially when hurt in the church by other Christians
To live above with the saints we love, oh, that will be glory.
But to live below with the saints we know, well, that’s another story.
It’s not easy to forgive, but we’re called to do it.
The key to forgiving others is remembering how much God has forgiven you.
Realizing God’s infinite love and forgiveness can help you love others.
The Cross - To his executioners - ‘Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.’
Paul wants us to let God worry about the wrongs we’ve suffered and instead forgive and let love guide our life. It is love that binds all the other practices together.

TWO

How does Jesus Christ living in us express itself in practice? Let love guide your life
Colossians 3:14 ESV
And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
All the virtues Paul encourages us to develop are perfectly bound together by love.
Compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience are impossible to have without love, and love is impossible to have without compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.
As we clothe ourselves with these virtues, love is the last garment we put on. A belt.

There are few exhortations in Scripture that are more comprehensive than this one. “Word or deed” takes in everything in life. “Deeds” can be preaching, teaching, eating, exercising, driving, cleaning house, shopping, visiting, working, playing (basketball, soccer, tennis, fishing, even watching)—everything! Our words are everything that passes our lips, even in unguarded moments. Everything we say or do is to be done “in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

1 Corinthians 13:2–3 NLT
If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:
Even in a community of believers (church), the actions of some offend or hurt others; how believers respond is critical. Experiencing God’s forgiveness shows that believers must forgive one another.
Living the Christian life without love leads to distortion and fragmentation and stagnation. Things that don’t lead to a life of peace, and Christians should live in peace.
In fact, peace should rule in our hearts.

THREE

How does Jesus Christ living in us express itself in practice? Let the peace of Christ rule in your heart
Colossians 3:15 ESV
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
If you cloth yourselves with love it will lead to peace. Peace in your heart, peace with others, peace in the church.
Paul specifically says to let the peace of Christ ‘rule’ in your hearts. Rule is an athletic term telling us to let Christ’s peace be the umpire or referee in our hearts.
The heart is the center of conflict because it’s where our feelings and desires clash - fears and hopes, distrust and trusts, jealousy and love.
It’s about making the choice to promote peace in our souls and in our families and in our churches.

FOUR

How does Jesus Christ living in us express itself in practice? Always be thankful
Colossians 3:15 ESV
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
Colossians
Thankful people can worship wholeheartedly. Gratitude opens our hearts to God’s peace and enables us.
Are you celebrating God’s goodness? Do you have relationships, good memories, abilities, material possessions, three meals a day?

FIVE

How does Jesus Christ living in us express itself in practice? Keep God’s Word in you at all times
Colossians 3:16 ESV
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

SIX

How does Jesus Christ living in us express itself in practice? Live as Jesus Christ’s representative
Colossians 3:17 ESV
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
