Jesus and the Woman of Samaria

4 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2(although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. 4 And he had to pass through Samaria.

Background

Leading up to
ch. 1:1 Christ revealed as the word of God
Ch. 1:12 Christ revealed as the savior of the world
ch. 2 1st miracle at wedding at Canon
ch. 2:23 Jesus goes to Jerusalem to observe Passover Jesus observes the passover celebration that is not loosely about him but literally about him(Mathew 3:15)
ch. 3:22-36 Jesus goes to Judea where he spends time with the disciples and he teaches them how to make disciples.
Animosity sparked between Jesus’ disciples and John the baptist disciples (Luke 9:49-50)
ch. 3:30 John exalts Chris. Point to Ponder: Christ wants to overshadow your life
In ch. 3:22 Jesus leaves Jerusalem and goes to Judea to do ministry to avoid controversy and controversy finds him there.

Why did controversy arise

according to ch. 3:22-26 Jesus does ministry training with the disciples, he teaches the disciples how to make disciples.
If Christ is going to overshadow your life whereby you begin to think like, act like and treat others like he treated his neighbors, then your gonna have to be discipled. This is not just instinctive behavior. You have to be discipled in the teachings of Christ.
Discipleship in the greek is the word (Manthano) which means to learn
salvation does not make you a disciple, it changes your position with God. have peace with God no longer enemies we are reconciled
Discipleship starts at the point you implement . Jesus tells Phillip to follow him. Follow means to : cling, stick, cleave, hold to. one definition suggest to pursue ()
Jesus is spending time discipling his disciples and teaching them how to make disciples and as a consequence theres arises controversy!

How Jesus handles the controversy

ch. 4:1 Jesus got tipped off about the rumor mill going around and it wasn’t even factual.
ch.4:2 it was Jesus’ disciples making and baptizing more disciples
ch 4:3 Jesus left Judea to go to Galilee to avoid controversy. ( jealousy and envy ensued and Jesus took the low)
This is a good example of why we need to be discipled
John’s disciples on one hand getting jealous, Pharisees catching feelings, Jesus discerns this town ain’t big enough for both of us to do ministry and there be peace, so Jesus takes the low and moves on to Galilee.
Pharisees catching feelings Jesus discerns this town ain’t big enough for both of us to do ministry and there be peace, so Jesus takes the low and moves on to Galilee
Fact : sometimes we try to hold on when God says move on....
Jesus discerns this town ain’t big enough for both of us to do ministry and there be peace, so Jesus takes the low and moves on to Galilee
This passage raises a theological question that begs answering.
Jesus is savior and the word manifest according to , and everybody that got a ministry only have one because of him. The scriptures are about him, the rituals point to him and states that his own people don’t even recognize that he is the one scripture is talking about. Johns disciples and the pharisees are offended in his ministry and he takes the low. My question is how low can you go because according to scripture Jesus has already reduced himself when he came in the flesh .
so Jesus takes the low and moves on to Galilee
Philippians 2:5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
When this situation arises that is causing controversy, instead of allowing it to ensue, Jesus took the low.
Question: When was the last time you discerned or decided to take the low?
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.
Hebrews 2:6 ESV
It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him?
Proverbs 15:1 ESV
A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Psalm 138:6 ESV
For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar.
Psalm 138:6 ESV
For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar.
Matthew 23:12 ESV
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
Proverbs 15:1 ESV
A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Luke 1:52 ESV
he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate;
Matthew 23:12 ESV
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

6 It has been testified somewhere,

“What is man, that you are mindful of him,

or the son of man, that you care for him?

Luke 1:52 ESV
he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate;
1 Peter 5:5 ESV
Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Jesus disciples his disciples not just in word but in action!
Taking the low is a true sign of Discipleship
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

luke 9:23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
Jesus leaves Jerusalem for Judea to avoid controversy / Then he has to leave Judea for the same purpose

Distinction of fruit in your life
If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
Romans 12:18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

3. Distinction of fruit in your life
Galatians 5:22

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, klongsuffering, kgentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Mathew 7:15-20

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
