The Constraing of Jesus

He Constrained me by His Grace

And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

Constrained: to force somebody to do something

to compel, force urge upon press

They Argued against going, there were several reasons why the use of constraint was necessary.

John 6:15 ESV

Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

The disciples were caught up in the excitement Christ had to send them across the lake and disperse the crowd in order to calm the disciples and keep them from making a serious mistake.

And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,

The Consecration of Jesus

The Grace for Personal Preparation:

He needed to be renewed and strengthened . He was physically Exhausted.

Its times in our lives that when we are tiered its not a good time to go to the beach but its time to pray

He needed to recover a clear perspective of His mission, He was mentally exhausted His mind was tired.

He needed to be charged with God’s power and with singleness of heart to do God’s will.

So much power had gone out of Him He was Spiritually Drained.

Hebrews 4:16 ESV

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them.

Christ knew that they would be fighting a storm.

And having to strain against the storm and having to fight for survival would help calm the excitement

And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.

Concern of Christ

Now, you know that all of us have troubles in this world.

And our Lord here was not showing off when He walked on water. It certainly wasn’t a publicity stunt. He wasn’t merely demonstrating His power. But, you know, every miracle that Jesus gave, every miracle that Jesus performed, had a deeper lesson than the miracle itself.

It was not only a demonstration of His power, but it was a declaration of His wisdom and His plan for us.

I think it was G. Campbell Morgan that said, “Every parable that Jesus taught was a miracle of instruction, and every miracle that Jesus performed was a parable for our instruction.” Now, that does not mean,

when I say that the miracle was a parable, that I believe the miracle did not happen. Indeed, it happened. But there is a lesson in this miracle for us to learn. And that’s what I want us to see tonight as we look at this particular message: “How to Get On Top of Your Troubles.”

Concealing of Christ

But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear.

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”

Calling out to Peter

He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”

Catching of Peter

Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
