“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.
“ ‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.
There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
“ ‘And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.
There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,

Sardis means escaping ones, those who came out
This letter change from the previous letters.
For the poor but yet church at Smyrna the Lord marks a significant
had nothing but praise
For the churches at Ephesus, Pergamos and Thytaria He had some words of praise
But this church in Sardis He didn’t have anything good to say.
The city of Sardis was known for its riches and Luxury
Home of a well-known King named Croesus who issued out the first gold coins
The city Sardis was captured twice because twice the watchman neglected their duties their misguided complacency and lack of vigilance lack to their destruction.
Just like the city in which this church was situated the church was asleep while the enemy came in and destroyed them.
This Church was dead and lifeless, A church that was satisfied with keeping things just as they have always been. A church resting on their laurels and past history just reveling in what has been.
This church died because this church didn’t allow the Holy Spirt to control their assembly.
This church was in a deep spiritual coma approaching death
Autopsy
You can’t kill a church from the outside it only strengthens it.
A church dies when its people Die
A church dies when you live off of your past accomplishments
You can’t live off of your past testimonies
A church dies when they build a cathedral on the corner of self-satisfied and complacency
This church was dead and they didn’t even know that they were dead
“ ‘And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.
Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.

How long will you lie there, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?
The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside!
I shall be killed in the streets!”

Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.
The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’
