Sermon Tone Analysis

Introduction: If you have been a part of Hillcrest for awhile you may have realized that we place a high priority on teaching the Bible.

And you may have noticed that my particular approach to teaching the bible is usually to move from Old testament to New Testament covering books of each.

And so today we are beginning a new series thru the book of Obadiah.

However, in preparing us for this study i want to begin with answering this question.

Why preach the whole Bible?

You might be in some conversations with members from other congregations, or perhaps hear some good preaching on podcast, or just be wondering in your own mind.

Why the whole Bible?

Aren't we New Covenant Christians?

Shouldn’t we focus on key topics of our day?

Shouldn't Jesus/ words consume our attention?

After all, As followers of Christ He is our Lord and Savior and as those who belong to Him should obey His words.

So why spend time preaching thru the whole Bible when we have the Gospels that contain specific words from jesus Himself?

Transition: And so to help us answer this question today I want to focus in on Jesus’ perspective of the whole Bible.

What was His view of the written Scriptures?

How does He answer this question?

With that in mind i want to give you 4 reason from Jesus for preaching the whole Bible and then wrap up with a few practical applications!

Why preach the whole Bible?

Four reasons from Jesus.

(Matthew 4:4) We live by every word that comes from mouth of God.

The teaching concerning inspiration helps us to view the Bible like Jesus did as he quotes from Deuteronomy 8:3 .

II Peter 1:20-21 , II Timothy 3:16-17

(Matthew 5:17-18) Affirmation of the OT.

He placed the purpose of His ministry upon the written truth of the OT.

(Luke 24:25-27) Explanation of the OT.

He placed the substance of His own identity upon the written OT.

(John 16:12-13) Anticipation of NT.

Jesus placed the future expansion of his ministry and identity upon the Holy Spirit inspired revelation that would come through His eye witnessed apostles writing the N.T.

Jesus’ endorsement of NT also suggests his endorsement of the sufficiency of the cannon of Scripture.

The Bible is the preserved written authoritative and final word of God.

Transition: Jesus told His disciples in His final commission before ascending back to Heaven (and He is telling His church today) Matthew 28:19-20 Everything that Jesus commanded was either in reference to the Old testament written Scriptures or in anticipation of the New testament written Scriptures.

And if we would obey the commission of our Savior and King then we should teach the Bible as Jesus did.

2. Three Practical reasons.

Helps us learn our Bibles so that we can trust and obey.

Acts 20:27 Declared the whole counsel of God.

Its necessary because the whole Bible declares our whole Savior and causes us to worship from wholistic lives of praise.

He created us as whole individuals who together make the whole church to whom we all need the whole Bible to worship Him wholly.

Keeps the preacher accountable and the gathered body grounded.

II Timothy 4:1-2 He charges young pastor to preach the Word.

Its very easy to be swayed to preach preferences, or tickle ears.

And its just as easy to seek out those who’s preaching we find far more pleasing than what we may hear from our own pastors.

Helps us maintain the unity of the whole the body of Christ.

Ephesians 4:1-3 Today we live in a world with many words.

Multitude of contradicting information.

When the truth of the sermon is coming out of the truth of the Scripture text then the congregation has something that we all can conform to.

We can all be of one heart and attitude and unified in the truth of God’s word.

Because we may all gather with a different word, or opinion but when we submit together to the word of God, then we scatter with a truth to rally around.
