Completed Through the Teaching of Christ (Part 2)
Marital Purity
/Text: Matthew 5:27-30/
*Matthew 5:17* /Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil./
Place Preached - (Mississauga International Baptist Church)
Date Preached - (03~/18~/01)
Introduction:
This is the second in our series on being “Completed Through the Teaching of Christ”.
There is great importance to this subject of marital purity in our day.
It is desperately needed.
We live in perilous times and many homes~/marriages are on the brink of disaster.
They are on the front line of Satan’s attack.
What is happening in the world?
EXPLAIN
What in the world is happening in the church?
EXPLAIN
Satan wants to sift you as wheat, he wants to attack and devour you like a roaring lion.
He will hurl every fiery dart he can your way!!
We must not be indifferent or passive about these things.
And we dare not follow the world!!
“/Men think of the world, not as a battleground but as a playground.
We are not here to fight, we are here to frolic.
We are not in a foreign land, we are at home.
We are not getting ready to live, we are already living, and the best we can do is rid ourselves of our inhibitions and our frustrations and live this life to the full./” - A.W. Tozer
Today we will spend our time addressing two areas: The Purity and the Permanence of the God-ordained institution of marriage.
! I. Purity in the Marriage vs.27-30
VOW - “/will you love her, honor and keep her in sickness as in health, in poverty as in wealth, *and forsaking all others, keep thee only unto her* so long as you both shall live?/”
!! A. Adultery – The Act vs.27
Adultery refers to sexual relations outside one’s own marriage.
It is a highly treasonous and traitorous act against the family!!
*Proverbs 6:32* But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
“/Thou shalt not commit adultery/” – *Exodus 20:14*
(seventh commandment)
In the OT adultery was a capital offense.
*Leviticus 20:10* And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, */the adulterer and the adulteress/* shall surely be put to death.
LOOK UP & READ *II Samuel 11:1-5*
David committed adultery, as King he had immunity from consequences of the law, but he paid for his sin many times over with his family.
LOOK UP & READ *John 8:1-11* (/The woman taken in adultery/)
Adultery can refer generally to all sexual sin, and not just the very act.
!! B. Adultery – The Attitude vs.28
“/But I say unto you/”! - His word is law.
*John 2:5* His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
*John 15:3* Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
*It begins in the heart – “…./in his heart/”*
“/Here the divine law is shown to refer, not only to the act of criminal conversation, but even to the desire, imagination, or passion which would suggest such an infamy…………….Irregular looks, unchaste desires, and strong passions are of the very essence of adultery; and who can claim a lifelong freedom from them?
Yet these are the things which defile a man/.” - C.H. Spurgeon
*Romans 2:22* Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery?
thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?
*It continues to come to fruition with a look – “/whosoever looketh on a woman/”.*
David looked upon Bathsheba.
*It is a look with intent – “/to lust after her/”*
LUST – /epithumia - / denotes "strong desire" of any kind, the various kinds being frequently specified by some adjective.
The word is used of a good desire in *Luke 22:15; Phil.
1:23*, and *1 Thess.
2:17* only.
Everywhere else it has a bad sense.
*Romans 6:12* Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
David took a lingering look at Bathsheba
The sin is not committed at first sight, but to linger, to look a second time with desire, to leer becomes a gross sin.
Men your eyes are for your wife only!! If you are not yet married keep your eyes and your heart pure for the one you will marry.
*Adultery always involves an accomplice – “/with her/”*
Bathsheba invited the look of David.
*Proverbs 7:10* And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.
*Isaiah 47:2* Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.
*Proverbs 7:13* So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,
IMPUDENT - "/strong countenance/" When used of man, this word carries the idea of */prevailing as in a war or struggle/*, or as being */belligerent/*, particularly to God.
Practical advice – Men look a lady~/woman in the eye, keep your eyes above the neck line.
Ladies dress in such a way from the neck down that a man who sees you will not be provoked to thinking lustfully.
!! C. Adultery – It’s Arrest vs.29-30
We ought to be ruthless in dealing with these issues in our heart and life.
These verses suggest severe measures, which are indicative of vigorous self restraint.
Drastic measures are needed!
Now Christ is not advocating bodily mutilation!
THE EYE *vs.
29* (The right eye)
Many forms of sin are indicated by the eye.
The Bible speaks of the LUST, PRIDE, JEALOUSY, ENVY, REVENGE, COVETOUSNESS, ROBBERY & FLATTERY that are indicated by the eye and spring forth from the heart.
*Proverbs 27:20* Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.
This figure is used for obvious reasons related to the sin mentioned in the previous verses.
TV ~/ Reading material ~/ Internet ~/ Places we go
*2 Peter 2:14* Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
*Job 31:1* I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?
*Psalms 101:3* I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.
“/Better a blind saint than a quick-sighted sinner/” - Spurgeon
THE HAND *vs.
30 – *The same principle is again emphasized.
OFFEND (/Broadus/) – Cause thee to stumble, cause thee to sin.
The word is from the Greek noun /skandalon/ (Eng.
Scandal).
Denotes primarily the trapstick or trigger of a net or trap, against which the game strikes and causes the trap to fall.
“/Right eyes and right hands are no longer right if they lead us wrong!/” - Spurgeon
LOOK UP & READ *Proverbs 6:23-28*
! II.
Permanency of the Marriage Vows vs.31-32
VOW – “/To have and to hold.....From this day forward.....For better for worse.....For richer for poorer.....In sickness and in health.....To love and to cherish.....*'Til death do us part.....*/”
!! A. How God views Divorce
God hates divorce!
*Malachi 2:16* For the LORD, the God of Israel, */saith that he hateth putting away/*: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.
I do not believe that a Christian should ever initiate a divorce based on *I Corinthians 7*.
