Walking Where Jesus Walks
/Text: Matthew 8:18-22/
Place Preached - (Mississauga International Baptist Church)
Date Preached - (07~/15~/01)
Introduction:
What does it mean to follow Jesus?
(GIVE EXAMPLES of what some folk think) Is it important to follow Jesus?
(YES) Does Christ expect us to follow Him? (YES)
The central thought of our text is that there is a cost involved, there is a price to pay in order to follow Jesus.
There are sacrifices to be made
In another passage Jesus put it this way…
*Luke 14:26-27* If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
An attitude of anti-sacrifice prevails in today’s North American Christianity.
No-cost discipleship.
The idea is “Jesus didn’t expect much of His disciples, why should we?” Come-As-You-Are philosophy.
People who come as they are, leave as they were, unchanged!!
The two men to whom Jesus spoke in Matthew 8 evidently misunderstood this foundational aspect of following Christ.
The first one responded in haste, and the other with needless delay.
A third similar example is given in…
*Luke 9:61-62* And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
While all of these men illustrate some important truths regarding our following of Christ, I settled on staying with the first example for today’s message.
The scribe was evidently already a disciple in the broad and general sense.
Notice vs.21 “/and another of his disciples/”.
This Scribe was…
1.
Willing – to accept Christ’s teachings and share His fortune.
2.
Warned – “Count the cost”
3.
Did he Walk on?
– assumed – We don’t know.
The more important question is Will we walk on?
Will you follow Christ?
My purpose today is two-fold.
1).
To show what it is to walk where Jesus walks.
2).
To show you that it is possible.
Here are several lessons we must learn if we are to follow Christ.
! I.
He Leads us Contrary to Human Desire
These were the days when the multitudes thronged about Jesus.
Many of the Jews in those days were looking for a political Saviour from Rome.
They saw Jesus as their hope…..
*John 6:15* When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.
He may have been looking for a temporal messianic reign.
He may have been motivated by desire to associate himself with the “successful” ministry of Christ.
!! A. He was over confident; self confident.
NOTE: “I Will….follow”
You cannot follow Christ in the power of self.
EXAMPLE: Peter
*Luke 22:33-34* And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
!! B. He responded with haste
As opposed to the reluctance and delay of the second man in this text.
ILLUS: Rash vows~/The Altar~/Public commitments etc.
LOOK UP & READ *Matthew 21:28-32*
!! C.
He had not counted the cost.
He did not make it easy; Nor did He deceive the man into thinking it was easy.
Christ was not interested in professions only.
Not profession only, but confession borne out by commitment.
He desired followers who were genuine and sound.
*2 Timothy 2:3* Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
! II.
He Leads us Contrary to Human Reasoning vs.18
The Bible tells us in verse 18 that Jesus “/gave commandment to depart unto the other side/”
“The other side” - That was east of Galilee.
Why should He depart?
He was enjoying a good prosperous ministry in and around Capernaum.
Read these verses in the same context….
*Luke 4:42-43* And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.
43 And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.
Christ’s steps were directed by clear Biblical purpose and principle.
What is directing your steps?
Your Life?
How you spend your money?
Your Time?
Where you Live? Etc.?
! III.
He Leads us Contrary to Human Comforts
They are not sinful, but are not to be our first consideration.
!! A. The Foxes have holes
!! B. The Birds of the air have nests
That is they have a place of comfort, rest, and familiarity.
!! C. No place for the Son of Man to lay His head.
(Not involuntary poverty, but chosen)
NOTE: He was leaving Capernaum (*Matthew 9:1* And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into /his own city/.)
EXPLAIN – “Son of Man” – His identification with man, also a claim of Messiahship.
Term is used over 70 times in Scripture:
*John 12:34 * The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?
The scribe must make up his mind to follow a homeless, wanderer.
!! D. The Poverty of Jesus
*Isaiah 53:2-3 *For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
*Luke 2:7* And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
What was the purpose in Christ’s poverty?
*2 Corinthians 8:9* For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit”
! IV.
He Walked some Paths that we Cannot Walk
He set us an example, yet His life was unique as the Son of God.
There are some places Jesus went where we can only stand on the sidelines in hushed and holy silence and wonder.
