"FOLLOWING MOSES, FINDING JESUS"
"MOSES & HIS MOTHERS" (EXODUS 2:1-10)
OUTLINE STYLE: INDUCTIVE DEVELOPMENT
INTRODUCTION:
1. (01 SLIDE) FOLLOWING MOSES, FINDING JESUS
Ø Throwback to Exodus 2, for a special Mother's Day highlight!
2. MOSES & HIS MOTHERS
a) Moses began his life like everyone, with a birth mother, but born into
family and a people under the bondage of slavery.
b) Through a strange turn of events (and God's sovereignty), he would be
adopted into the house of the man who kept his people in bondage.
c) Today, we'll meet Moses' birth mother and adopted mother, and
unpack the qualities that God used to protect Moses.
TEACHING - FOLLOWING MOSES:
3. (02 VERSE SLIDES) EXODUS 2:1-10
4. (03 SLIDE) A MOTHER OF FAITH
a) Jochebed (yaw-keh-bed) means "Yahweh is glory". (Ex. 6:20 & Nm. 26:59)
i) Verse 3: "When she could hide him no longer..."
ii) Consider Jochebed's faith.
Ø What kind of relationship did she have with the Lord?
Ø What kind of heart condition submits a child to God's will?
o Faith often leads to radical submission!
iii) Imagine her surprise when her daughter returns! (Faith rewarded!)
5. (04 SLIDE) A MOTHER OF MERCY
a) Bithiah (bit-ya) in Hebrew literally means "Daughter of Yah" or
"Daughter of God".
i) Understanding Jewish Perspective (Shouldn't she be hated?)
Ø "In Rabbinical Literature: Daughter of Pharaoh; identified in the Midrash
with Moses' foster-mother. The name is explained...'You have called Moses
your son, although he was not your son, therefore I will call you my
daughter, although you are not my daughter.'" (JewishEncyclopedia.com)
Ø Explaining the Jewish Perspective: "Although the name of her father is not
stated in Exodus, it is specified he was a Pharaoh. Rabbinic interpretation
Midrash of her Hebrew name states that since she took Moses in as her
son though she did not give birth to him, so does God adopt her as his own
daughter, naming her Bat-Yah ("daughter of Yah"). The Bible and Midrash
both assert that she was the mother of Moses, having drawn him from the
Nile and bestowed upon him his name, which in Hebrew meant 'drawn
out'." (Wikipedia.org)
ii) (05 SLIDE) Heart Condition: Do we have any Biblical evidence?
Ø Ex. 2:6 (She took pity on Moses!)
Ø Ex. 2:9 (She paid his birth mother to nurse him!)
Ø Acts 7:17-22 (She adopted him as her own!)
b) There's a deeper story!!!
APPLICATION - FINDING JESUS:
6. (06 SLIDE) MOSES' MOTHERS POINT TO JESUS
a) Exodus 2:1
i) Jochebed (yaw-keh-bed) represented Levi. (God's priestly tribe!)
b) (07 SLIDE) 1 Chronicles 4:1, 16-18
i) Bithiah (bit-ya) becomes part of Judah. (God's chosen tribe!)
CONCLUSION:
7. (08 SLIDE) THE GREATER STORY
a) One mother chose to let go and have the faith that God is in control.
b) One mother chose to show mercy on a child that was not her own.
