Illus: When ever I teach on the family, people come to me with exceptions of why the clear teaching of scripture does not relate to them.
Follow me here.
We honor mothers and fathers because it is through moms and dads that children should learn who God is, they learn to worship by watching their parents worship, they learn right and wrong.
We honor moms and dads because they are the central figures in a child’s faith.
When parents follow God and lead their children to do likewise, kids should absolutely obey them.
Are there executions.
yes.
if a child is abused, if the child is led to sin.
Parents, do you live and teach your kids in such a way that is pleasing to God, and is worthy of being obeyed?
(CSB) 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
21 Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they won’t become discouraged.

Illus: As I have studied why teenagers have dropped out of the church one theme has become clear.
Kids/teenagers are watching to see what their parents value, and then they tend to mirror the value.
So, If a parent is serious about their faith, takes time daily to read scripture with their kids, has a genuine prayer life that the child sees, makes church important in the families life, then the child will generally take the next step and become more serious in their faith.
If a parent on the other hand, is lukewarm in their faith, claims the title of Christian but the child does not live out faith at home, does not read scripture regularly themselves or with their kids , If the child does not see their parent pray, and does not see church as a priority, then the child will wonder why they should pretend to be a christian themselves when they see there is little substance behind it in their parents lives.
Parents, what are your children learning from you?
(CSB) 4 “Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one., 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
6 These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart.
7 Repeat them to your children.
Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Mom and Dad, you must take an active roll in teaching your kids to follow Jesus.

Illus: As a church we are intentional with both our students and our kids.
We know that our job is not to entertain kids, but instead to invest in kids.
Right now our 1st and 2nd graders are sitting outside our worship center learning to take notes from the sermon.
Our students are challenged regularly to think deeply in scripture.
With all of our effort and intentionality, your kid’s lives will see little difference unless you purposely teach them to follow Jesus.
The church is not the greatest influence in the child’s life, nor is school, or friends.
Mom, Dad, your kids are watching you.
If you want your child to grow up to truly love and follow Jesus, they need to see it in your life first.
even when he grows old he will not depart from it.
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
even when he is old he will not depart from it.
We honor moms by the legacy we live.
(both in Christ likeness and in other pursuits)
(CSB) 12 Honor your father and your mother so that you may have a long life in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
Moms and dads, your life will be magnified by your kids.
Will your kids magnify Christ in you, or something else?
Illus: It seems to be the popular thing to gripe about the next generation.
You do know where the next generation got their values?
Kids will honor what they see in their parents.
They will magnify what they see in you.
Are your kids going to grow up to be fully devoted followers of Jesus, or will they embrace a half hearted faith?
The answer to that question is in what they see in you.
Perhaps Philippians 4:8-9 needs to be the life calling of every parent for their child.
(CSB) 8 Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy—dwell on these things.
9 Do what you have learned and received and heard from me, and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.
To parents: Are you being intentional in leading your children to love and follow Jesus?
To All: Does the life you live rise up and call your mom blessed?
