Crickett Birthday Party….She never saw it coming
Some of the best things in life are things we never saw coming
Pentecost was one of those things even though Jesus was very clear about what was coming.
Kind of Confusing isn’t it?
Lets look
6 So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”
7 He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.
And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
He was not only telling them about the coming of the spirit but also about what they were to do with the Spirit when He comes.
The Revolution was and is not only Spiritual in nature but also Physical.
It is important to understand this truth because if we do not understand this our Faith Journey becomes part of our life instead of it become our life.
The Resurrection Revolution had the potential to die before it started…There are a lot of things that happen in this passage that while inspired by God would never have made a difference if the disciples had not only heard from God but acted on the Holy Spirits prompting.
I am convinced that the greatest need we have as Engaged followers of Jesus is not to hear from God…but to ACT on what God has already told us.
In order for the Spiritual life and power of God to change the world or bring Revolution there must be a real effort by Engaged Followers of the revolution to change the world.
(NLT)
They were together in Spirit and Proximity…Meeting together for worship is a must v 1-3
5 At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem.
6 When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.
7 They were completely amazed.
“How can this be?” they exclaimed.
“These people are all from Galilee, 8 and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!
9 Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia, 10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs.
And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!” 12 They stood there amazed and perplexed.
“What can th
13 But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, “They’re just drunk, that’s all!”
Peter Preaches to the Crowd
14 Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem!
Make no mistake about this.
15 These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming.
Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that.
16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:
17 ‘In the last days,’ God says,
‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.
18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit
even on my servants—men and women alike—
and they will prophesy.
19 And I will cause wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below—
blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
20 The sun will become dark,
and the moon will turn blood red
before that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives.
21 But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
will be saved.’
22 “People of Israel, listen!
God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know.
23 But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed.
With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him.
24 But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip.
The focus of this passage is almost entirely on the Spiritual aspect yet we see through out this passage that every powerful spiritual manifestation requires a physical response to advance this New Revolution to the rest of the world.
They were together in Spirit and Proximity…Meeting together for worship is a must v 1-3
They were filled in with the spirit and completed to preach…Tounges is not a gibberish but a gift of spreading the message…The Spirit of God enables the actual teaching v 4-13
The Spirit Gathered a crowd…Peter preached truth…unpopular truth… v 14-24
In order for the Spiritual life and power of God to change the world or bring Revolution there must be a real effort by Engaged Followers of the revolution to change the world.
CNN 54 sec Skydiving without a parachute video here
We may not all be looking for the rush of skydiving without a parachute…but I know that most if not all of us here want to know the power of God in our lives.
We want to be the answer to someones prayers
We want to be the healing hand of God emotionally and physically
We want to bring people to a peace that passes all understanding.
I think if we are honest we all want to live a Spiritually Revolutionary life.
There is nothing impossible to God’s people if they are willing to allow the Holy Spirit to manifest Himself through our tangible actions.
Advancing the Resurrection Revolution requires a tangible Risk
That is what Pentecost is all about…It was about taking the first steps of obedience into the power of the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised to send us.
In order for you and I to continue to be an active part of that advance we must be willing to take a leap of faith.
Don’t do something dumb…I am not saying to jump out of an airplane without a parachute…but I am saying that we need take the steps that God is calling us to.
Step into the Jordan
March around Jericho
Sling a rock at a Giant
Take a Donkey that does not belong to you
Talk to a prostitute in full view of society
What is God calling us to do that seems like a risk not worth taking?
