genesis 18:
Genesis 18:9–15 NLT
“Where is Sarah, your wife?” the visitors asked. “She’s inside the tent,” Abraham replied. Then one of them said, “I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!” Sarah was listening to this conversation from the tent. Abraham and Sarah were both very old by this time, and Sarah was long past the age of having children. So she laughed silently to herself and said, “How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master—my husband—is also so old?” Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” Sarah was afraid, so she denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh.” But the Lord said, “No, you did laugh.”
Why did God choose Sarah and Abraham ?
He chose two people who in their own natural ability COULD NOT do what God said would be done (have a baby)
Why did he not choose a younger couple?
He chose two people who in their own natural ability COULD NOT do what God said would be done (have a baby)
He chooses someone who has no faith that what is being suggested can even happen
He chose someone who laughed at him and told him why it cannot happen.
This contrasts with Mary (Mother of Jesus)who said
Luke 1:38 NLT
Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.
Many of God’s servants fought against his calling to use them
Moses (said he could not speak)
Jeremiah (said he was too young)
Gideon ( least clan in the smallest tribe in Israel)
Saul (hid amongst the luggage)
Some seemed unfit for any calling
Peter (scared by a servant girl causing him to lie about knowing Jesus)
Disciples( all deserted him in the garden)
Noah (became a drunk)
Jonah (ran from God-but God did not give up on him)
Saul-Paul(Killed Christians)
“Excuses are the nails used to build a house of failure.” (Emerson)
