Recap
Recap the strengths and weaknesses of the first two churches (Ephesus & Smyrna).
Recap the strengths and weaknesses of the first two churches (Ephesus & Smyrna).
Observation/Exegetical:
Observation/Exegetical:
Who is this message from?
That this sword comes from His mouth (1:16) is appropriate in response to false teachers (2:16).
Where does this church live? Hint: not physical location
Likely a multiple reference to Asclepios' (whose symbol was a snake) temple, Zeus' altar which from far looks like a throne and Pergamum's status as a center for Emperor worship
What is the strength of this church?
Faithful even in persecution within enemy territory
What is the weakness of this church?
Tolerance of false teachings (Opposite of Ephesus) “There are some among you” who taught/believed that it was okay to engage in:
What does He command this church?
(Opposite of Ephesus)
Idolatry and immorality (both sins Israel fell under Balaam).
“food sacrificed to idols” Presumably at the temple feasts and thus indirectly participating in pagan worship.
5. What does He threaten if they don’t repent?
5. What He does He threaten?
Not just the leaders but the church are responsible.
If the church doesn't deal with this the Lord Himself will. Popular usage of "let God judge" presupposes that God will be less severe.
6. What he does He promise to those who repent?
“hidden manna” - Salvation is portrayed as a second Exodus. Provided by the one who is the bread of life ().
“white stone”
Votes were cast with the guilty given black stones and the innocent given white stones (cf Carson). The natural stone in that area was black so that white stones were specially imported (cf Exploring NT vol 2).
Some stones functioned as privilege member cards to lavish feasts for victors cf Beasley-Murray. Combined with the promise of "manna", the faithful have a more worthwhile feast than pagan feasts.
No point asking what name is written on the stone. Suffice to say, similar to the vindicated Christ (), it indicates a new identity and authority.
7. What are some false teachings floating around?
must first distinguish between primary, secondary and tertiary doctrines.
8. How do we not be either like Ephesus or Pergamum?
