This set of verses is known as the shema
Deuteronomy 6:4 ESV
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
The Verse starts off Hear, O Israel.
Moses is calling the people of Isreal, God chosen people to listen to Him. To listen to the words he was about to speak.
God is calling us, the children of God, the Christ follower to listen to Moses instructions as well.
Moses first reminds Isreal that the Lord our God is one.
Moses is talking to a group of people who had bowed down to idols and will bow down to idols in the future.
We need to seem reminder that Moses gave the children of Isreal. That we serve one God.
Our hearts much like the children of Isreal are prone to wonder.
As Calvin rightly said “Our hearts are idol factors.”
Many of us don’t bow down to little statues, but we are guilty of taking good things and making them idols.
An idol can be anything we put in the place that God deserves to be in our lives.
Even good things can become idols.
Our spouse, children, gadgets, work, school, hobbies can all become idols
I don’t know about you but at times many of things I just listed take captive of my heart and I have to repent.
Moses is going to call us to teach our children this lesson. That we serve one God.
This can’t be one of those lessons we say do as I tell you not as I do. We must know and live as though their is one God and that is Jesus Christ and no other.
s c.Our hearts as well as our children hearts are idol factors. And we must constantly remind ourselves as well as our kids that the God of the Bible is the only God.I am guilty of this and I am sure you are guilty of this from time to time. Where we turn good things into more than they should be and they become idols before we know it. ii. (ESV)
remember the former things of old;
Deuteronomy 6:5 ESV
5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
for I am God, and there is no other;
Second Moses commands the children of God to Love the Lord their God with everything.
I am God, and there is none like me,
Yet again keep in mind who Moses is speaking to. The people of Isreal. Gods chosen people.
And we know because of the Old Testament that their will be times when they will not love God with everything. Their will be times when they will love other things more.
Moses is calling God’s chosen people to love him with all of its essence and expression. With all its being.
You think they would have because God had rescued them. You think they would have loved God because he delivered them from slavery. You think they would have loved God because God had not forsaken them.
Just as Moses called the people of Isreal to Love God with everything. Jesus in the New Testament quotes Moses and says.
Matthew 22:36–37 ESV
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
Matthew 22:26–27 ESV
26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh. 27 After them all, the woman died.
Jesus has called us to love him with everything. Like the people of Isreal you would think we would have no problem doing this.
Matthew
You think we would love Jesus because he delivered us from the slavery of our sin. You think we would love him because he has not forsaken or left us. You think we would love him because he rescued us by going to the cross and dying for our sins.
But just like the people of Isreal I am guilty sometimes of loving some things more than him. If you are honest you do as well.
I will confess, their are times I love my wife more, their are times when I love my children more, their are even times when I love his bride the church more.
When we come to these times we must repent.
Deuteronomy 6:6 ESV
6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
Deuteronomy 6:6 ESV
6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
Notice what Moses does next. Moses says, I have called you to listen closely to me. I have given you some reminders and some instructions.
I have reminded you we serve one God and that we are to love that God with all our heart, soul and might.
Moses says to the children of Isreal these commands are to be on your heart. You are to believe them, You are to live them out.
This belief is not to be just a head knowledge, but a heart knowledge.
You are to love God with everything you are.
Moses is about to give us as parents some instructions and for us to cary out the instructions he is about to give us. We first have to understand that their is one God and it the God of the Bible and do away with our false idols, Second, we are to love this God with everything.
If we don’t get this part of the instruction then we can’t accomplish what he is about to ask us to do.
I have learned as a parent their are some things I just can’t teach my kid because I am can’t do it or don’t love it.
For instance I could never teach my son how to duck. I don’t know much about ducks other than you have to go early in the morning. I don’t understand how to call them. I don’t understand what the duck blind is all about. I would not do well at teaching my son this because I myself don’t have a passion for it.
In the same way I couldn’t teach my daughter how to be a balorany. I can’t stand the balay. My wife took me to one, one time to see the nut craker and I felt like it would go on forever.
However, I could teach my son or daughter about music. I could teach them about swimming. Why because this is something I myself can do and I am pretty professate.
Moses is about to command us as parents to teach our children that their is one God and to love him with everything. And the reason many children don’t understand this is because children learn more by watching and what they see is mom and dad don’t only bow down to one God and they don’t love the God of the Bible with everything.
Deuteronomy 6:7–9 ESV
7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Deut. 6:
Moses tells us who has the responsbility to pass down the faith to our children lies with.
5.Third, the responsiblity of passing on our faith. a.This scripture takes an unusual turn next. b.In the middle of Moses instruction to the people of Israel c.In the middle of this series of sermons by Moses d.In the middle of this book which is written in the form of a Jewish treaty between God and His people e.In the middle of this expantion on the ten commandments. f.Moses stops and tells the people how this will pass from one generation to the next. g.Moses tells the Fathers to teach this to there children. h.Notice it was not the Kings responsibility or the governments responsibility. It was not primarily the Priest responsibility or the pastors responsibility. It was the parents responsibility and primarily the Father responsibility to teach his sons the ways of God. k.Verse 7 saysYou shall teach them diligently to your childrenThe word for Children in the Hebrew would be more accurate to be translated as son. 1.See a Father would teach his son the ways of God in the home and as the father teaches his son the ways of God any daughter and the mother would hear the father and they to would know the ways of God also.Adriean Rogers says: God intends that the first school, the first seminary, the first university is to be the home, with the father as the prime professor and president m. In 2007 and 2008, an organization known as FamilyLife sent out a survey called the Family Needs Survey. This survey took a careful look at the needs and habits of churched families. The round of study included data from nearly 40,000 parents.
It is with the parents. More particulaly it is the father’s responsiblity.
It is not the goverment or schools responsiblity
It is not primirely pastor’s or staff responsibility
.Notice it was not the Kings responsibility or the governments responsibility. If the father is not in the home or is not a believer then it becomes primarily the mothers responsibilty.
This is what we see with a young man by the name of Timothy
2 Timothy 1:5 ESV
5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.
Also, just because the father is to be the primary disciple maker does not mean you as moms are off the hook. Mothers have a huge responsiblity to encourage with the father is teaching in the home.
In the Hebrew culture a Father would teach his son the ways of God in the home and as the father teaches his son the ways of God any daughter and the mother would hear the father and they to would know the ways of God also.

Danny Akin in a recent sermon said: Fathers on average only spend 25 minutes with there children a week while Children spend 25 hours a week watching TV and spend 50 hours a week on average in School. 1.And we wonder why this younger generation has some of the ideals and morals it holds too. They have the school system which was never intended to raise your children and what they see on TV raising them
James Hamilton Jr. in the Book Trained in the fear of God said It does not take a village it takes a father.
What we need in our country today is Fathers who will step up to the plate and say I will be the front line of defense I will teach my child or children the ways of God.
I know what some of you are thinking. He is preaching a father’s day sermon on Mother’s Day. No I truly believe that if Men in the church would step up to their God given roles in the church and in the home. Then you at wives and mothers could be more what God has called you to be. But in the culture we live in now you as women are having to in many cases not only play the mom role but the dad role as well. Because many men have checked out. You are also have play roles in the church that where intended for men because they have checked out their as well.
The greatest gift you can give your wife and mother for mothers day is to be the man that God has called you to be.
In 2007 and 2008, an organization known as FamilyLife sent out a survey called the Family Needs Survey. This survey took a careful look at the needs and habits of churched families. The round of study included data from nearly 40,000 parents.
What they found was astonishing: More than half of parents said that their families never or rarely engaged in any sort of family devotional time. Of the minority that did practice some sort of family devotions, one-fourth admitted that these devotional times were sporadic.

Dr. Timothy Paul Jones who is author of several Family minister books
- One in five churched parents never read the Bible with their Children. (Timothy Paul Jones twitter)
-Two-Thirds of parents discuss Scripture with Children less than once a week.
For many of us are greatest mission field lives under our very own roofs and that is our children.
They truly see us for who we are inside and out.
In most studies that I have seen the greatest influence in our children's lives are you the parent. It is not His or her teacher, it is not there friends, it is not the church, or the pastor it is you the parent.
This is why Moses first calls us to hear, and then for us to have these commands on our own hearts. We can’t teach what we don’t believe
The most important thing we can teach our children is not how to play ball or even read. The most important thing we can teach our children is who and what Jesus has done for them.
Let it be said of us that we care more about where our children spend eternity than what college they get into or what sports team they are on, or how they did on there last report card.
In the past 50 years of children and youth ministry we have seen a scary trend where parents are becoming less and less involved in the development of there children.
We have seen this take place here at THBC
Instead we pass the buck to the professionals
For sports we let the coach handle it
For education it is up to the school system
Music we will find a music teacher
For teaching on God we look to the pastor and staff.
The pastor and is not to replace the parent as the primary discipler but instead connect with the parent and home and work with them.
God design is for the parent to be the primary discipler.
Dr. James Dobson said “All over this country little children are reaching for fathers who aren’t there. I want to evangelize as many people as possible, but my number one job is to evangelize my children. If America is going to survive, it will be because husbands and fathers begin to put their families at the highest level of priorities and reserve something of their time, effort, and energy for leadership within their own homes.”
If we want a revival in our land. If we want God to restore our land. It will not start in the public square. It will not start in Washington. It will not start in the churches.
If revival is going to come across this land it will start in the Home where parents take up the mantle of Spiritual leader and points their children to God.
This was and is Gods plan.
My prayer for my family is that 100 yrs from now if they Lord has not come back that my great great great grand child will be passing on the faith that Ginnie and I are passing on to our children.
It is my prayer that they can look back to Ginnie and me and say it started with them.
That my Great, Great, Great, Grandfather and mother were people who knew God was one and they Loved God with everything.
Moses continues next to tell us where we are to do this.
When you sit in your house and when you walk by the way
In other words make sure your house is Saturated with the Bible
Play Christian music in the home.
With all the garbage on the radio and youtube. with Christian music you don’t have to worry about your children here.
The other day minion and bruno Mars.
Hang Bible verses up on the wall.
If you where to walk in our living room you will find on our wall a scripture from Joshua that is an ever reminder to our family that we will serve the Lord. And around that verse we have pictures of us as a family.
Read Christian books to your younger children and Watch Movies with them.
And around that verse we have pictures of us as a family. c.Read Christian books to your younger children d.Watch Movies like the Chronicles of Narnia and talk about how they point to God. 2.Prioritize God in Community as you walk along the way. a.Make sure you as a family spend time with other families that make God a priority so your children can see. b.Make Gods community the center of there lives. That does mean Church should play a big part in your children's lives ii.Hang them on the doorposts. In other words In the home, In your marriages, in your relationship with family members iii.Teach them to love God in the gates. Let your children see that you love Jesus and it affects how you conduct business affairs. 6.Parents it is time for us to engage our children
Example: the Chronicles of Narnia and talk about how they point to God.
2.Prioritize God in Community as you walk along the way.
Make sure you as a family spend time with other families that make God a priority so your children can see that you are not the only ones.
Make Gods community the center of there lives not by dropping them off at church but taking them to church and talking about what you learned on the way home.
Hang them on the doorposts.
In other words In the home, In your marriages, in your relationship with family members. Let them see how who Jesus is to you affects every area of your life.
Teach them to love God in the gates.
Let your children see that you love Jesus and it affects how you conduct business affairs.
On my 30th birthday my wife had men write letters to me that I respect. The last letter was from my dad. Giving me wisdom that he wished he could pass on to me. To this day that is one of the most special gifts I have ever recieved.
I am not journaling to my children to pass down life lessons to them that I want them to know one day. Here is one of the journal entries to Sammy J.
Let us fall in love with Jesus and love him with everything and then let us teach this love our children.
Will you engage?
Today maybe you have realized that there is only one God and that is the God of the Bible and you want to surrender your life to Him today. I
If so I would encourage you during the time of response to come down and see me so I can instruct you on how to surrender your life to Him
Maybe today God has convicted you that you don’t love God with everything and today you want to repent of this and say God I want to make much of you with my life.
I had to a couple years ago. I was making my career Lord and I was neglecting my family and not being the spiritual leader. How will you respond today.
