Introduction
Today is indeed a special day, it is Mother’s day.
It is the one day of the year when we are faithful enough to recognize the value and blessing of our others.
but hopefully you are not guilty of recognizing them just one day a year.
If you are… well something might be wrong with you....
Just saying....
Mothers are important.
Now honestly, Mothers are not just those who have given birth, but mothers are those who have raised, labored, cared for and been a blessing to those God has placed under them.
So today we desire to bless our wives, mothers, those dear ladies who are so precious to us.
As I prayed and thought about this day… my thoughts turned to the idea of what godly mothers teach us, how they instruct us .... and how their faith filled lives help us in so many ways...
So this morning honestly, I will be all over the place looking at some special women of the Bible...
So get your Bibles out and get ready to turn the pages as we see how God will speak to us this morning....
Our first stop will be the Old Testament book of I Samuel, and we will look at a precious lady by the name of Hannah..... lets go find it.
Look with me at
Look with me at
This passage will lead into my first thought here for Mother’s day.
1. Godly Women are Women of Faith....
Now Hannah is a special lady, She had a husband who loved her and cared for her.
But her life was difficult for her husband’s other wife had children, and she would pick and provoke Hannah.
Year after year Hannah’s family would travel to Shiloh to present their offerings and worship before the Tent of Meeting, the portable tabernacle that was stationed there when Eli was the High Priest.
And when you look at Hannah’s life, she has one desire, to bear a child and feel complete in her life.
On this visit she steps out on faith and stays by the entrance of the tabernacle and prays to the Lord, and if you look at what she says… she reaches out by faith making a vow to the Lord.
It says Hannah, vowed and vow.... there is a reputation there that speaks to her heart.
She make a commit to the Lord that She was determined to keep at all cost of the Lord would but remember her.
Now the word “remember” here is not that God had forgot here in any way, shape or form, but she is calling for the Lord to re-visit her situation and see her need and help.
She is reaching out by faith.... Lord help me.
I think this thought is one of the best moments we see in the lives of mothers, godly mothers are women of faith.
They reach out to God knowing He is aware of their life, their situation and He will help them.
If we examine the vow Hannah makes we find something indeed that is special… Verse 11.
She pledges to give her son back to the Lord.
She wants a son, but she also desires the Lord to be honored in her life and in this child’s life.
Mothers are not selfish people, they put everyone ahead of themselves in so many ways… We see this Hannah wants a son more than anything, but she is not greedy… Lord this child will be yours and this child will be a Nazarite vow placed on Him.
But look on down… she prays and she is praying so fervently, praying and her lips moving this evening by the tent of meeting, the tabernacle… She is praying so intently, Eli thinks she might be intoxicated....
Verses 12-18
Listen, when Eli understands her state and her heart… He sends her way in peace, and says, God in peace and the Lord God of Israel grant your petition you have made...
Listen, when Eli understands her state and her heart… He sends her way in peace, and says, God in peace and the Lord God of Israel grant your petition you have made...
She got up and went away in peace… by faith
Godly mothers are women of faith knowing they can depend and follow the Lord.
Hannah had a child and after he was weened, she brought him to Eli the high priest and gave him back to the Lord...
And Samuel was used greatly before the Lord.
He would be the last judge over Israel … before the nation rejected God and cried for a King...
Godly women are women of faith.
Now consider her life and we can see something else about Hannah that I think it prevalent in the lives of godly women...
2. Godly Women are Women who are Sacrificial in Nature...
When God places a child under a sweet ladies care, something wonderful happens .. sacrifice....
I have seen this in my wife, I have seen this in many of you ladies and in the lives of many more, Godly women give and give..... it is even illustrated in Scripture.
Godly women give and give
Look with me at
Not only did Hannah have faith when she prayed and asked the Lord for a child, but she knew she would keep her promised before the Lord.
She would give him back to the Lord at the right time.
When he was weened....
He is a young man, the age we are not completely certain…but most think perhaps 6 to 7 years old.
But that isn’t the most important point.
The point is Hannah sacrificed her most important desire, her son.
She gave him back to the Lord.
She was a woman of sacrifice....
She gave back her possession....
She knew God would take care of him and would use him for the glory of His own name.
But this is what I see, mothers, strong women are women who sacrifice , who give back to the Lord in many many ways...
If you would allow me to take you to the gospel of Luke chapter 1, we find Mary the mother of Jesus.
She was a woman who sacrificed....
You might wonder how… well remember this.
In Luke chapter 1 we find that the angel, Gabriel has come to the presence of a young woman by the name of Mary...
As Gabriel told her of the Lord’s plan and how these things would happen even though she was a virgin… Mary’s response is one of the most amazing I have ever heard from the mouth of a very young lady at this time...
She was willing to sacrifice so much so that the Lord’s plan might be fulfilled.
The virgin Mary, betrothed to Joseph , engaged if you will… she steps out of the norm and is willing to do God’s will...
She sacrifices her life.... her own desires and I am sure even Joseph’s life and plans to some degree in order to follow the Lord’s will.
She sacrificed her heart as she watched him grow and mature knowing He was the son of the living God, She sacrificed as she watched him being put to death for the sins of the world ..
She sacrificed so much...
Moms here today, your husbands, and even your children can reflect your love and sacrifice … what a blessings you are dear ladies… What a blessing...
And for your faith and sacrifice we say thank you...
But let me share one more thought with you today....
3. Godly women as faithful and steadfast....
Let me take you to the life of one more lady in Scripture and reflect on this last thought today....
One of the greatest blessings I see in the lives of mothers, is when a mother’s life is known by the way she walks with the Lord.
She is a godly, obedient faithful woman.
One such lady, or truly I should say to ladies is a mother and grandmother… Lois and her daugther Eunice..
Look with me at
How sweet, these ladies, a family that Paul knows has a sincere and steady faith.
It has served them well but has blessed the lives of their son and grandson, Timothy.
These ladies set the example in their homes…They led by example and they never wavered.
Consider what Paul says here by sincere......
The word sincere here in this passage says there is nothing hypocritical in their lives… Their faith is expressed and felt in a sincere and real way...
And think of what else Paul says… the faith is steadfast.... it dwelt in Lois life, the grandmother, and also in the life of her daughter Lois...
Multi-generational my friends.....
The faith of a household we know doesn’t mean those children and grandchildren are automatically going to be Christian, but it sure sets the stage for it....
Ladies today, especially young mothers you will have to lead by example in your homes, your faith has to be consistent to ensure your children are brought up in a way that honors God but also prepares them for this dangerous world we live.
Now men you have to do so as well, it is not your wife’s job to take the lead, it is yours… but how awesome is it that our wives love the Lord and serve Him as well.
Men, confess to them, we cannot do it alone, we need them every step of the way,
Mothers we love you today, we bless you and are so thankful for you....
thank you for all you do
