Guarded For A Purpose

1 Peter 1:3 ESV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1
“According to his great mercy” - It’s all about God! According to His great mercy.
“He has caused us to be born again to a living hope” - A new birth or new creation
He has caused us - Our testimony
Why has he called us to be born again? So we can have a living hope
This living hope is because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead! He conquered death so we could have eternal life.
1 Peter 1:4 ESV
to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
Eternal life is an inheritance that is:
Imperishable: immortal, imperishable, lasting forever, incorruptible.
Undefiled: pure, untainted.
immortal, imperishable, lasting forever, incorruptible
pure, untainted
.Undefiled
Unfading: never fading.
1 Peter 1:5 ESV
who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
I am being guarded
Guarded: be held prisoner
I am being held prisoner to this inheritance of salvation! How through faith.
This salvation will be revealed at the second coming of Christ.
1 Peter 1:6 ESV
In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
“In this you rejoice”
Rejoice: be extremely joyful, be filled with delight, rejoice
be extremely joyful, be filled with delight, rejoice
Even though we will have persecution and suffering while in this world. We can rejoice in our living hope!
If need be, you have been grieved: Sometimes it is thought that a strong Christian will never be grieved in a trial. The idea is that a Christian should be like Superman; though bullets are shot at Superman, they all bounce off of his chest. Yet Peter here tells us that there is a “need be” not only for the various trials, but more especially that there is a “need be” for being grieved itself. God has a purpose not only for the trial but also for the heavy grief we feel in the trial.
1 Peter 1:7 ESV
so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Genuineness: expresses approval after evaluation or testing to see if something is what it claims to be, if it measures up to a standard.
Here the faith of the one experiencing trials is evaluated. Are they really trusting God?
Faith is tested to show that it is sincere faith or true faith.· Faith is tested to show the strength of faith.· Faith is tested to purify it, to burn away the dross from the gold.
The Grace New Testament Commentary 2. Rejoicing in Trials (1:6–9)

expresses approval after evaluation or testing to see if something is what it claims to be, if it measures up to a standard. Here the faith of the one experiencing trials is evaluated. Are they really trusting God?

iii. Gold is one of the most durable of all materials. Yet it too will one day perish, but our faith will not.
1 Peter 1:8 ESV
Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,
1 Peter 1:9 ESV
obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
1 Peter 1:9
