Good morning!
Grab your apps and turn to . We’ll be looking at verses 19-23 in just a moment.
It’s privilege to be with you again this morning. I was here last summer when Pastor Alex was on Sabbatical. Some of you might know the story but Pastor Alex and I go back a few years. We served on staff together at NOEFC. When he left to plant Gateway downtown, I thought he was nuts so I prayed for him. I still think he’s nuts and I still pray for him. A few years later, he invited me into his crazy world of church planting and we planted Gateway West. Gateway Heights, Old Brooklyn, River. After 7 years, in 2016, we left West and moved to Grand Rapids, MI where I have been serving as a CPC with NAMB. It’s been a lot of fun. God has done some really really cool things.
Amanda and I have been Married for 23 years this summer. Five kids. 16 to 6. 3 boys 2 girls. Full house. Jacks over queens.
Again it’s good to be with you today.
Let me ask you a question. When is the last time you had a “what in the world do we do now” kind of moment?
Sometimes these can be good things like falling in love, having a baby, job that moves you out of town. Things like that.
But most of the time they are “uh oh” moments. Or better yet, an “oh crap” moment. Do you know what I’m talking about?
an unexpected bill. car repair.
planter
a medical diagnosis that didn’t go the way we thought it would
a supporting church pulls its funding
planter goes rogue and becomes a disciple of Rob Bell.
the list can be endless
What’s your moment?
Painting cars story
In our passage today, the disciples are having their own “what IN THE WORLD do we do now?” moment
Let’s read
19 In the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because of their fear of the Jews. Then Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!”
20 Having said this, He showed them His hands and His side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
19 That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. 20 As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord! 21 Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” 22 Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
I want you to circle 3 words. fear. rejoiced. send.
They moved from FEAR to JOY to MISSION.
From Fear…
From Fear…
Let’s first look why were THEY afraid and then connect it to us today.
Why were they afraid?
They lived in a world that didn’t love Jesus!
What are we afraid of?
To Joy…
To Joy…
Let’s talk about this “peace to you” phrase. It was and still is a common jewish greeting but many commentators think there is a bit more going on here. Listen to what Jesus promised his disciples earlier.
27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
And in
NLTI have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
Why did they rejoice?
Jesus was alive!
Are you rejoicing that you have a risen savior?
My Cavs won last night. Sorry Brett. Lebron is the meteor that has caused the raptors to become extinct. Not too worried about the Boston. The luck of the irish will take them so far, right Jason.
My boys and I love to get crazy and “rejoice” over the wins of our teams. Do we celebrate and rejoice over our team’s victories more than the ultimate victory that our Savior has over sin and death - our sin and our death.
To Mission! (vv. 21-23)
To Mission! (vv. 21-23)
What was special about their mission?
It was God’s mission. God is a sending God.
What is special about our mission. It’s the same mission today!
Assess yourself in these areas from strongest to weakest.
What might we fear living in a world that doesn’t love Jesus? (brainstorm)
What is one action I need to take to grow in my joy knowing that Jesus is alive? (strategy development)
