Mind your manners....
Do you remember some of the things your mother may have said to you?
• Always eat your vegetables...
Wait till your father gets home...
Because I said so....
• Clean off your plate....
I would have never gotten away with that when I was a kid...
• Make sure you have on clean underwear…in case you are ever hit by a bus...
• If you don’t stop right now....
We all can remember these sayings and more. But my favorite is, “I love you.”
Hopefully, each one of us had a mother or mother figure that has said that to them at some point in our lives. God designed mothers love us and to love us enough to teach us.

In fact, we see in many places in scripture where that is evident.
• Get in bed NOW!!!

Our Scripture today includes several passages, but we will start with .
• Wait till your father gets home...
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
They will be a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck.
The writer of Proverbs takes for granted that parents will have the best interest for their children. The first and most important classroom in the school of life is the home. Parents are expected to teach their children well. God desires parents to take the lead in teaching their children the truths from His word.

These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

I am grateful to have a mother, grandmothers, aunts, and other mother figures in my life that instructed me in the way of the Lord. I am forever indebted, perhaps like you, for what they have instilled in me. For many of us, we are at an age where some those phenomenal influences have gone on to receive their reward in heaven. Others of us here perhaps had influences that were not as godly, but nevertheless did indeed give us life and for that we should honor them.
We all can remember these sayings and more. But my favorite is, “I love you.”
Hopefully, each one of us had a mother or mother figure that has said that to them at some point in our lives. God designed mothers love us and to love us enough to teach us.
Interestingly on this Mother’s Day, I am going to share some insights for all of us in how we can honor our mothers today no matter if she is sitting beside you right now or alive in another location this morning, or if she is no longer on this earth. The passage from is written for sons and daughters, something that each of us here have in common. We are all sons and daughters. At some time, each one of us was born from a mother that carried us for several months, and painfully brought us into this world. I don’t think there is an exception. We are all a son or a daughter, so this passage speaks directly to each one of us.
In fact, we see in many places in scripture where that is evident.
I want to give you four ways that you and I can honor our mothers today, no matter where they are.

Now there may be several of the funny statements that your mother said that we have already chuckled that you remember, but what about the instructions your mother gave you for life?
NIV84
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
They will be a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck.
For me it was encouraging me to place my faith in God. My mother taught me the principles found in . She showed me by example many things that were passed down from her parents and grandparents. She had in our home things of God which gave me access to and a love for God’s word. I was never denied a bible. I might have been denied a car, extra snacks, and staying out too late but I was never denied an opportunity to learn and grow in the wisdom of our Lord.

Another thing I remember that my Mother instilled in me was fear. I tower over my mother in height but to this day, I still believe she could take me out if she needed to do so. I remember as a very young, know it all teenager, and I had gotten into the habit of not getting up when I was asked to do so. One particular morning, I was having a moment of insanity thinking that I did not need to get out of the bed exactly when she had requested me to get up. I was in a dreamy state when she came in for the third time, and shook me to get my attention. I was laying on my side when she ever so gently shook me and I reacted in a way that was not too smart. I rolled over with my arm outstretched and in doing so caught the side of her face with the back of my hand. Now, it was not a slap, just a gentle brushing. My little mother grabbed me out of the bed, stood me up against the wall, and said, “it is 7:25 and your bus comes at 7:30. You need to be outside at 7:28 waiting on it.”
Guess what? I was. And to my knowledge, I never had a problem getting up on time again. I developed a holy fear and respect for my mother that still exists to this day.

Another beautiful aspect I remember about my mother’s instruction is that she encouraged us to have fun. My family does not have to be together long before we are laughing and having a good time, and my mother is in the center of that good time. My mother taught us the ability to enjoy life. Mom has helped us understand fully

Receive Your Mother’s Instruction

When you and I receive our mother’s instruction we have to ACQUIRE it. That means you gain possession of it. says it this way:
The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge;
the ears of the wise seek it out.
Proverbs 18:15
In order to receive any type of instruction you have to be willing to look for it.
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn.” - Benjamin Franklin
Also in order to receive your mother’s teaching, you must ADMIT it into your heart and mind.
You have heard these things; look at them all.
Will you not admit them?
“From now on I will tell you of new things,
of hidden things unknown to you.
Isaiah 48:6
When you are receiving your mother’s teaching, you are allowing it in. Which brings us to another step of receiving. Once you acquire it, and admit it, next you have to ACCEPT it.
Listen to advice and accept instruction,
and in the end you will be wise.
Proverbs
You have to allow your mind like the soil that Jesus talked about in the parable of sowing seeds in .
Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown.”
Mark 4
When you and I honor our mother’s instruction, we are able to remember it, receive it and then we can reinvest in it.

Reinvest Your Mother’s Instruction
Reinvest Your Mother’s Instruction
When you invest in something, you are committing to and devoting to a purpose or a cause. Hopefully, your mother’s instruction shows evidence of her commitment and devotion to you being all that you can be. You are her pride and joy! When we remember and receive her instruction, we must in turn reinvest that same commitment and devotion in our own children’s, our nieces and nephews, our grandchildren or in others that God has allowed us to have influence upon.
I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
2 Timothy 1:
Paul is reminding young Timothy of his mother’s and grandmother’s reinvestment in his life and how that is to be passed along. Throughout the Bible, there is much evidence of reinvesting in others. Jesus called it making disciples:
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-2
When you remember, receive and reinvest your mother’s teaching, you need to take those instructions and HONE them. Hone is an old-fashion word for sharpen. There is great power in a tool that is sharp. When we take the godly instructions we remembered and received, then we sharpen them to use for the glory of God, great and mighty things can happen.

“‘Each of you must respect his mother and father, and you must observe my Sabbaths. I am the Lord your God.’”
As iron sharpens iron,
so one man sharpens another.
Proverbs 27:17
He made my mouth like a sharpened sword,
in the shadow of his hand he hid me;
he made me into a polished arrow
and concealed me in his quiver.

Now a word to those that are thinking, you know this is all good stuff, but what about those of us that didn’t have a very good mother. Unfortunately, in this fallen world in which we live, there some that really messed up as mothers and poorly passed along their instructions. This is where we look again at what God intended and ask Him to show you His desire and His way and take that which was very bad to you and turn it around for the good. A beautiful example of this is found in the story of Joseph and his brothers treating him horribly. Joseph stated:
You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.
God can take your past, the good, the bad and the ugly, and indeed work it for your good!
Another beautiful aspect I remember about my mother’s instruction is that she encouraged us to have fun. My family does not have to be together long before we are laughing and having a good time, and my mother is in the center of that good time. My mother taught us the ability to enjoy life. Mom has helped us understand fully
Another beautiful thing that happens when we reinvest in our mother’s teaching, we will provide her HONOR.
The fifth commandment tells us
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
Paul reiterated this in
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
When I reinvest my mother’s teaching into my daughters’, I am lastly giving them HELP.
When I am reinvesting and providing help to my children, I am getting a line of succession from the hand of God!
“There is no one like the God of Jeshurun,
who rides on the heavens to help you
and on the clouds in his majesty.

With your help I can advance against a troop;
with my God I can scale a wall.
2 Samuel 22:30
How are you honoring your mother’s instructions?
tells us that we will have a great reward in doing so:
They will be a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck.

Our weeping has always turned to a time of laughing and our mourning has given us joy to dance.
So, on this Mother’s Day, I encourage you to remember your mother’s teachings.

I am not much into wearing garland on my head and a chain around my neck, but when I allow God’s truth to permeate my life, I become a lovely ornament for His glory and I will make my life better as a result!
It makes me think of the words of Jesus when He said in .
“Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
As we honor our Mothers today, let’s do so by remembering, receiving, and reinvesting their teachings in our lives. What a great day to begin doing so!
