Whats the big deal about Tongues?
Whats the big deal about Tongues?
Tongues and its interpretation are uniqe to the church of Jesus.
All other gifts were manifested in the OT: There were healings, miracles, widsom, knowledge, prophesy, discernment - but not once do we see the gift of tongues and interpretation of tongues.
When the Holy Spirit was poured out at pentecost what form did it take? Hands - healing? Brain - widsom? Dove - peace? A scroll Wisdom? A burning Bush - miracles?
Lets see:
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Whats the big deal? Speaking Tongues perfectly illustrates the most basic principle of the church walk -Trusting the Word of God by faith.
What word?
2 Scriptures:
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
and
I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
Beyond the obvious step of God pleasing Faith, Tongues also allows us to commine perfectly with our Heavenly Father.
Its a way to worship perfectly
For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
its a way to perfecly praise God
Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
its a way to perfecly give thanks
For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
its a way to perfectly speak of gods works
Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
its a way to perfecly magnify God
For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
Its the perfect way to edify ourselves
He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
and its a perfect way to build up your faith
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
This perfect form of communication is God’s special blessing bestwoed upon his bride because it undoes the curse of Babel where God confused the laungages.
To speak in tongues is to fluently speak a language of either men or angels, a language that does not come from your mind, but by way of God’s spirit within you.
It is primarily designed for one’s internal use, but it is also to be utilized in a gathering of Christians by following it with its companion manifestation, interpretation of tongues, so that the Church is edified by one’s praise to God
I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
().
“Tongues” is a language that God gives you, just as He first did on Pentecost when the Church was born.
It is no wonder Paul said:
I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
Tongues is a Faith Issue
Tongues is a Faith Issue
Speaking in Tongues is not possible without Faith. And its not passive faith that no one can see, its active faith that is public. You cant “hide” it.
To Speak in Tongues you must be trusting in God.
Look:
Goes always goes first John 316 . God sends His son. Jesus dies on the cross. The Spirit raises him from the dead. Now its our turn: Will you believe and Trust in Jesus? Then its God’s turn: He washes us and gives us his holy Spirit. Then its our turn: Speak in Tongues.
You wqant to speak in a launguage ive never herard before? Yes.
Seriously? yes.
How? Like at Pentecost, They spoke and I gave the Utterance.
You want me to open my mouth, and employ the use of my lungs, voicebox, tongue and lips to make sounds and those sound will be a real laungage? Yes.
Does that require Faith and trust in the Word and Promises and work of the Holy Spirit? You bet it does!!! But isent that what being a christian is all abiout? In the end it comes down to wheather or not you believe in the Word of God.
But its ridiculous! You beleieve that a fish swollowed a man, you believe that at the sound of an angels trumpet you are goibng to sore through the air like superman, Yes its rediculous, but God has chosen the ridiculous things to confound the wise
But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
here’s a Question I get asked a lot: Pastor, why dont you speak in tongues more regulary?
Simple:
First, I speak and pray in tongues far more than i speak and pray with my understanding. probably 80% of my prayer life is in tongues.
But at church here, well the answer is found in the Bible:
I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
Let me give you another biblical illistration of the faith required to speak in Tongues:
Mat 14
And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
Put yourself in Peters shoes: Did Peter have a promise? Yes. What was it? That he can walk on water. Is that a totally ridiculous thing to believe that one can? Completly preopstrious. But Jesus would not ask us to do anything we couldnt do by his grace. What does Jesus say? “Come”. Translation: I want you to step out of that boat and put your feet on water that you know you cannot walk on. Peter hand to rest all his weight ojn that put and it was only at his feet touched the water that Jesus turn it solid benieth his feet.
Speaking in tongues is a walking on water experience.
You have the promise. You have the call. but you have to talk that physical step of faith, breath the air into your lungs, and actually speak. As sson as you starts, the Holy Sprit gives utterance to those words and you speak in tongues.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
You have the motivation. You have the promise. You have the incentive. You have the call - Now its your turn to Step out.
