How many of you have watched a house get built?
I watched this building get built. This building is not even a year old. One of the first things they did was laid the foundation for the building. They dug deep into the ground and poured concrete into several holes so that they could make a solid foundation. Jesus talked about having a foundation for our lives in Luke chapter 6. Let’s look at it tonight.
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say?
I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them:
He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the river crashed against that house and couldn’t shake it, because it was well built.
But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The river crashed against it, and immediately it collapsed. And the destruction of that house was great.”
Tonight, we are celebrating everything that we have learned this year in Mission:Agape. Each week, we have looked in the Bible and tried to learn from it. In this passage of scripture, Jesus is speaking to people who have been listening to His teachings. Jesus asks them a direct question in verse 46,
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say?
Jesus is speaking to His followers about their obedience to Him. He basically puts them into two categories: Those that act and those that do not. We do not have Mission: Agape just so you have something to do on Wednesday nights. We have Mission:Agape so that you can hear the truth of God’s word and then act on it.
We want you to take God’s word and make it the foundation for your life. Take a look at the floor underneath your feet. It is made of concrete and this building is sitting on this same floor. There have been storms that have come through since the building was built and it still stands because of the foundation. If you build your life on God’s word, it will prove to be the best foundation that you can have.
This foundation is not built just by attending church and listening to the Bible. The foundation is not built just by knowing the Bible. Jesus is saying that the foundation is built by doing what the Bible says.
If we do what the Bible says, then when life gets tough, we will be able to face those difficult situations with faith. We will be like the man who built his house on the rock. The flood came and the river crashed against his house, but his house stood firm because its foundation was on the rock.
Life can come at us like a flood sometimes. It may be trouble at home, difficulties with a classmate, or any number of things. If we face these situations while doing what Jesus said, then we can face them and not fail. However, if we are not obeying the Bible and face these situations, our world will collapse down around us.
The first step to doing what the Bible says is to believe in Jesus. If you are going to build your life on a solid foundation, it must begin with Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians
For no one can lay any other foundation than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ.
Jesus told us all that we need to know to be able to live a life pleasing to God. It begins with trusting in Jesus as our Savior.
The Bible tells us that we have all sinned. Every one of us. Did you know that lying is a sin? How many people in here has told a lie?
The Bible also tells us that because we have sinned, we can not go to heaven when we die. We can’t go to heaven because God is there and sin cannot be in the same place as God. So, Jesus, God’s Son, left heaven and came to us. He died on the cross for our sins. He paid the price of our sins so that God could forgive us of our sins and we can go to heaven. We just have to believe that Jesus took care of our sins and ask God to forgive us.
If you want to ask God to forgive you of your sins, come up here while we sing.
