When You hear the term Christian, what do you think of?
When You hear the term Christian, what do you think of?
We think of the noun.
Perhaps some one who is a follower of Christ?
However, the term Christian as an adjective has come to describe many things.
Christian music
Christian books
Christian bookstore
Christians schools
Christian universities
Christian concert
Mormons refer to themselves as Christians and they deny the Trinity.
Seven Day Adventist refer to themselves as Christians and they deny the reality of hell and eternal judgment.
Even today, we are seeing this concept of modern Christians, or progressive Christians (That is Christian who find it perfectly reasonable to hold to abortion, gender discrepancy, Homosexuality and with this this we have seen an erosion of the term Christian.
This term has been hijacked now and destroyed.
Example: Christian bookstores, Christian music, Christian School, Christian concerts, Christian Movies
What is a Christian bookstore?
What is Christian music?
What is Christian school?
Christian concerts?
Christian movies?
These avenues and mediums have adopted this term and it seems that they have also adopted a love for the culture and its ever changing morality.
Unfortunately, then we must define what it means to be Christian in the modern world.
When I was coming through NGU, Christian Worldview was pushed. I appreciated what they are trying to do, but I think the waters are a little cloudy as to what it means to be Christian.
So what does that mean?
Because often what is associate as Christian isn’t what Christ has authorized. Hear me out, the term Christian isn’t bad, but the things associated with the word Christian has muddied the waters of what it means to be purely Christian.
How are we to live in a world that is trending this direction?
Are we to live with a Christian worldview? Perhaps that isn’t the clearest answer.
I think a better term and a better worldview is the term biblical.
The Bible doesn’t change. Speaking of the eternality of the Word, Jesus says:
“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
“For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
The grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our God stands forever.
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
Matthew
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
His word remains.
Is it of the Bible?
If it is of the Bible, then it will be purely Christian.
Normally that means we will be counter culture.
Because people don’t have a problem calling yourself a Christian. People have a problem with submitting to the authority of God, and the authority of God in today’s world in the Holy Word of God that reveals his beloved Son.
They don’t have a problem with us believing in God so long as God’s standard isn’t what they are held to.
So how are we to live in this present world?
Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance,
but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;
because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Five Commands we see in 1 Peter 1:13-16
Prepare
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
Keep Sober
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
Fix Your Hope
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Do not be conformed
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Be Holy (godly)
But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness;
over the next few weeks, we are going to be going through a study by David Platt entitled, Counter Culture.
