What does David mean by lifting his soul to God?

What does David anticipate as a result of “lifting his soul up to God”
That his soul would be gladdened

A reason to rejoice
As trusting in God is to rely on God exclusively to provide and rescue us
Lifting our soul to God is to look to God alone for our Joy, happiness, and fulfilment
Baby analogy
A baby look to his parents for all his needs and trusts that he will be fed and taken care of.
But is that ALL a baby looks to his parents for?
Sometimes a baby just wants mom to make him happy
We are to look to God and him alone for our joy
In this life
And the perfect fulfilled joy to come
let me not be put to shame;
let not my enemies exult over me.
Because of the previous two lines David asks the following guarantees of God
The first line corresponds with the third and the second line with the fourth
To God I lift up my soul
Let me not be put to shame
Oh my God in you i trust
Let not my enemies exult over me
To be put to Shame here is similar to being disappointed.
To look forward to something that doesn’t actually happen
A birthday party with all your friends invited
The day comes and you parents say “sorry, no party”
You would feel shame because you did not get that which you expected and greatly looked forward to.
Likewise, David trusts in God
David trusts God for protection
If his enemies were to exult over him then God had failed to offer the protection David trusted in.
Who are David’s enemies?
Could be people, often in the Psalms it is
For the remainder of this Psalm David seeks 2 things
Forgiveness for his sins
Guidance to live so as not to sin
3 Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame;
they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.
David declares his certainty that God will not disappoint
None who wait for God
We are waiting
What we look forward to is not yet fully realized.
But it is certain
Indeed
But some will be put to Shame
Those who violate God’s covenant without a cause
Those who disobey God and His commands
Those who are treacherous to God are not waiting on God
They are not truly trusting in Him
They may claim to follow him and trust in Him
But their actions prove their treachery
PS 25:4-5
Unlike the treacherous, those who are truly waiting for the Lord seek to live in obedience to God
David appeals to God to
Know his ways
Teach him his paths
lead him in his truth
And it is because of God’s salvation and he is hoping and trusting in God
That Hope and trust will create a heart that wants to live obediently to God
David does not want to sin and violate God’s law
Only God can teach and lead him in the way he should go.
David also asks God to forgive his sins
David recognizes that he needs mercy
Trying to walk obediently does not obligate God to forgive, David recognizes that it is God’s mercy and Steadfast Love
Because God is merciful and full of steadfast love
Remember not my sins and transgressions
In the Second and third section he petitions God for forgiveness and guidance.
In the fourth and fifth section he appeals to God’s character to affirm that God will provide forgiveness and guidance.
