Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
God’s ability exceeds expectations
-God is able to do far more than we think or ask
Then Job answered the Lord and said:
“I know that you can do all things,
and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
‘Hear, and I will speak;
I will question you, and you make it known to me.’
I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
but now my eye sees you;
therefore I despise myself,
and repent in dust and ashes.”
-Job’s response to God’s list of questions about eternity
-Proof of God’s power. God brings people back from the dead, Jesus healing, performing miracles
2) Just because God is able , doesn’t mean He will
Then Nathan went to his house.
And the Lord afflicted the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and he became sick. David therefore sought God on behalf of the child. And David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them.
Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
a. God cannot do anything outside His character
-Lie, Bless sin, make two absolutes contradict, etc.
-Can God make a boulder so big he can’t lift it
b. Through God’s terms, not ours
i. His expectations
-”abundantly more than we ask or think”
ii. Through His name/will
-We don’t see the full picture
Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
3. We have access to God’s Power
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
i. Access through the Spirit
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
ii. Sin limits our access
but your iniquities have made a separation
between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
so that he does not hear.
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
4) Christians are called to Glorify God
a. Making Jesus our first priority
i. make more of him, less of me
He must increase, but I must decrease.”
-Elevates the Gospel
-Real humility, not fake
b. Living the Gospel gives us greater access to His power
c. God’s glory is eternal
i. for all generations
ii. Forever & Ever
And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
