When Traditions Supercede the Word of God

Mark 7:7-13

Introduction:     Jesus here deals with a common problem among the Pharisees of their elevated traditions over the Word of God.

We should understand that this is still an all too common problem even today.

I.                      CULTISM EXISTS EVERYWHERE, SHOWING ITSELF AS THE PRIME EXAMPLE.

                        A. Cultism defined.

In religion, cultism is a dogma or tradition that is practiced as an enhancement of grace.

                        B. Reasons for it.

                                    1) Pride

                                    2) Ignorance

                                    3) Laziness

II.                     CULTISM IN THE CHURCH.

                        A. Particular traditions in practice invalidate scripture.

                                    1) By making tradition doctrinal.

                                    2) By misinterpreting scripture.

                                    3) By manipulating scripture.

                        B. The obvious need to stay separated from dangerous dogmatic error.

Pentacostal and Baptist doctrines are incompatible for cooperative education.

                                                1) We are brethren working for the same master.

                                                2) We can have fellowship.

                        C. Inductive Bible study with Biblical preaching is the only remedy for cultism.

                                                1) Regular Bible study such as, small groups, S.S., devotional studies.

                                                2) biblical preaching that is expository is essential.
