Text:

Topic:Obedience of Jesus Christ

Thesis: All Christians must be obedient to the we of God

Purpose: The purpose this text is to show that Jesus had a will to be obedience to the will of God

Introduction: ‎In order for one to do the will of God he must hear and obey the word of God.

The gift of the quails to Israel was not repeated, but the manna continued to rain down for them every night. In sending this, God meant to train his people to obedience. Therefore he bade them gather each the same amount, about two quarts; and though some proved over-greedy and gathered much more, yet when they brought their load home to their tents, each found he had exactly the two quarts. So also, God bade them preserve none for the morrow; and when some disobeyed and sought to store the manna for the future, “it bred worms and stank.”(Exodus 16)

Jesus Christ’s obedience meant ultimate personal cost

39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
Philippians 2:8 KJV 1900
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Matthew 16:21 KJV 1900
21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
John 10:18 KJV 1900
18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
John 13:1 KJV 1900
1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
Hebrews 5:8 KJV 1900
8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
Isaiah 53:10–12 KJV 1900
10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: When thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, He shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: By his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; For he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, And he shall divide the spoil with the strong; Because he hath poured out his soul unto death: And he was numbered with the transgressors; And he bare the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.

Jesus Christ’s obedience was necessary for God’s salvation plan

Romans 5:18–19 KJV 1900
18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
Matthew 27:40–42 KJV 1900
40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
Luke 24:26 KJV 1900
26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
John 17:2–4 KJV 1900
2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. 4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
John 17:26 KJV 1900
26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

Jesus was obedient to his parent, authorities and Jewish laws

Jesus Christ’s obedience was shown in his human relationships

He was obedient to his parents

51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

He was obedient to secular authorities He paid taxies

Matthew 17:24–27 KJV 1900
24 And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? 25 He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? 26 Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. 27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.
Matthew 22:17–21 KJV 1900
17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? 18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? 19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. 20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? 21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.

He was obedient to the Jewish law

Jesus Christ’s obedience and commitment were to the spirit of God’s law; his attitudes to Jewish legalism were often seen as disobedience. Disputes over the Sabbath are one example.
Matthew 5:17–18 KJV 1900
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Matthew 22:37–40 KJV 1900
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Mark 2:23–28 KJV 1900
And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him? How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him? And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
John 7:19 KJV 1900
Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?
John 10:37–38 KJV 1900
If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.

Believers should follow Jesus Christ’s example of obedience

Obedience to God’s will is paramount

Matthew 19:17 KJV 1900
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

Christlike obedience expresses love for God

6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
John 14:15 KJV 1900
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
John 14:20–21 KJV 1900
20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. 21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
John 15:12 KJV 1900
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
