Why Do We Practice Baptism By Immersion? 

1. Because Jesus was baptized by that way (). 

2. Every baptism in the New Testament was by immersion.

Baptism by immersion was originally practiced by all branches and sects of the early Christian church.

Sprinkling or pouring initially began as a way to baptize the sick or bedridden, but immersion was always the preferred method. Sprinkling was adopted by the Catholic church as the predominant method in the 13th century.

Tertullian, AD 200 — “We are immersed.” 

Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem, AD 348 — “The body is dipped in water.” 

Extra-Biblical Sources: 

Epistle of Barnabas— “We indeed descend into the water full of sins and defilement, but come up, bearing fruit in our heart, having the fear of God and trust in Jesus in our spirit.” 

Hippolytus (170-235 AD)—“When the person being baptized goes down into the water, he who baptizes him, putting his hand on him, shall say, ‘Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty?’ And the person being baptized shall say, ‘I believe.’"
