Sometimes God asks us to do or go places that we may not agree with. Maybe we fear the unknown or are so content in our life that to step out of that comfy enviornment, we would have to experience discomfort. Jonah knows this better than anyone. He was given a task directly from God and as we will soon learn, his disobedience, fear and anxiety cost him an immense amount of time, pain and almost his life.
He lived in the Zebulunite city of Gathepher during the reign of King Jerobam II around 793 BC.
He was a zealous patriot for Israel and disliked the Assyrians (where Nineveh was the capital) because he knew the Assyrians would be used to punish Israel in the near future.
Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.”
