Illus: Walking around TPC—Exhausted.
It is clear in life that we need the Lord.
Save me, God, for the water has risen to my neck. I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing; I have come into deep water, and a flood sweeps over me. I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head; my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me, are powerful. Though I did not steal, I must repay.
David uses metaphors hear to describe his need. He has been crying out to the Lord and seeking him with all of his strength because v4 his enemies are pursuing him without cause.
But this happened so that the statement written in their law might be fulfilled: They hated me for no reason.
Illus: Math is for reasoning, not just to pay bills.
2. It is clear that God knows all things.
God, you know my foolishness, and my guilty acts are not hidden from you.
Emphatic—you know
David knows he is a sinner and that he is also innocent; therefore He asks the Lord to intervene.
3. It is clear that those who obey the Lord will suffer.
Do not let those who put their hope in you be disgraced because of me, Lord God of Armies; do not let those who seek you be humiliated because of me, God of Israel. For I have endured insults because of you, and shame has covered my face. I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother’s sons because zeal for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me. I mourned and fasted, but it brought me insults. I wore sackcloth as my clothing, and I was a joke to them. Those who sit at the city gate talk about me, and drunkards make up songs about me.
David appeals to the Divine Warrior, the supreme God, the covenantal God of Israel.
Scriptures are clear from onward that their is this tension, this battle going on between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent.
For the sake of God David suffers scorn and shame. He becomes a stranger to his own people.
Jer 15:15
You know, Lord; remember me and take note of me. Avenge me against my persecutors. In your patience, don’t take me away. Know that I suffer disgrace for your honor.
It is not easy following the Lord.
Calling the crowd along with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
David has made his life about the worship of the living God, and it has cost him. His zeal is for the presence of God. Jesus too was zealous for the Temple and drove out the money changers. Why? Because they prevented worship of those outside of Israel.
What are you zealous about?
For even Christ did not please himself. On the contrary, as it is written, The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.
What does it cost you to follow Jesus?
Ramadan—muslims.
4. It is clear that we should pray that God move for His own glory.
But as for me, Lord, my prayer to you is for a time of favor. In your abundant, faithful love, God, answer me with your sure salvation. Rescue me from the miry mud; don’t let me sink. Let me be rescued from those who hate me and from the deep water. Don’t let the floodwaters sweep over me or the deep swallow me up; don’t let the Pit close its mouth over me. Answer me, Lord, for your faithful love is good. In keeping with your abundant compassion, turn to me. Don’t hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me quickly! Come near to me and redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies.
Prayer for David is like oxygen.
Prayer for David is like oxygen.
He asks fro mercy and deliverance. favor. Why should God answer? Because He is a covenantal God of love.
Love, faithfulness, and compassion are grounds for deliverance. David knows this because He read his Bible.
The Lord passed in front of him and proclaimed: The Lord—the Lord is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth, maintaining faithful love to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But he will not leave the guilty unpunished, bringing the fathers’ iniquity on the children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation.
David, however, is sinking and needs help. He needs redemption to be near.
5. God knows the details.
Psalm 69:1
You know the insults I endure— my shame and disgrace. You are aware of all my adversaries. Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I waited for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters, but found no one. Instead, they gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
David even looks for sympathizers and is unable to find them.
Jesus on the cross.
6. It is clear that wickedness will not last forever.
Imprecatory nature of the request to stop his enemies.
Let their table set before them be a snare, and let it be a trap for their allies. Let their eyes grow too dim to see, and let their hips continually quake. Pour out your rage on them, and let your burning anger overtake them. Make their fortification desolate; may no one live in their tents. For they persecute the one you struck and talk about the pain of those you wounded. Charge them with crime on top of crime; do not let them share in your righteousness. Let them be erased from the book of life and not be recorded with the righteous.
7. It is clear that Lament turns into Praise.
Psalm
But as for me—poor and in pain— let your salvation protect me, God. I will praise God’s name with song and exalt him with thanksgiving. That will please the Lord more than an ox, more than a bull with horns and hooves. The humble will see it and rejoice. You who seek God, take heart!
8. The Lord cares for his people.
For the Lord listens to the needy and does not despise his own who are prisoners.
9. The Cosmos praises Him.
Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them,
10. All things will be made new.
The hope of the eschaton strengthens the people.
the hope
But based on his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
At that time those who feared the Lord spoke to one another. The Lord took notice and listened. So a book of remembrance was written before him for those who feared the Lord and had high regard for his name.
