Dr. Murray: Some is and some ain’t. Some do, Some don’t. Some will, Some won’t.

There will be those that will accept Christ and live for Christ, and there are those who will not.
John 10:22 NASB95
At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem;
The Feast of Dedication was not a Biblical Feast.
There was 7 biblical feast.
3 in the Spring, 4 in the fall
The Feast of Unleavened came after Passover commemorated
The Feast of Dedication was a feast instituted by Judas Maccabeus to memorialize the cleansing and rededication of the temple under Judas Maccabeus in 164 b.c. following its desecration by the Syrian forces of Antiochus Epiphanes.
This feast was one instituted in anticipation of the Messiah, who they thought was coming to set up a time of political independence.
to memorialize the cleansing and rededication of the temple under Judas Maccabeus in 164 b.c. following its desecration by the Syrian forces of Antiochus Epiphanes
And this is what they wanted. This was the heart of the Jews. This feast of dedication was and is a testament to that.
They want the Messiah to bring them political independence and prosperity. What they don’t want is what they have in Jesus.
Even His disciples were focused on a political Messiah.
Acts 1:6 NASB95
So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”
Even after Christ had rose from the grave, the disciples have failed to see that Christ has come to set up a kingdom that is not of the world.
Jesus says himself:
John 18:36 NASB95
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.”
Jesus whole ministry his disciples and others have misunderstood the nature of His ministry.
This is precisely why the Jews have rejected Christ up until this point.
He is not the Messiah they expected or wanted.
So listen to their next conversation:
John 10:24 NASB95
The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”
This question has to be frustrating for Jesus.
Think of all that he has done up until this point, just in the book of John.
John the Baptist has testified of him.
He has turned water into wine.
He has healed the noble man’s son in chapter 4.
He has healed the man who was sick for 38 years.
He has fed over 5 thousand people with a few fish and a little bread.
He has walked on the water.
He has healed the man born blind.
In between all of that, Jesus has had conversation after conversation with these Jews.
It seems that half of our sermons have dealt with the rejection of these JEWS.
I think you can agree, that no matter what, the Jews will not accept Jesus authority.
He has told them over and over again of his union with the Father.
But he is not their Messiah.
He is blowing their expectations out of the water.
He isn’t their Messiah.
The heart of the matter here is that the Jews want Jesus to do what they want him to do. The heart of their sin is a lack submission.
But why?
We look at these stories and we say, “How could they not have believed?” They saw all that.
I dont understand
They don’t believe for the same reasons people today don’t believe.
Look at what Jesus says in verse 25.
John 10:25 NASB95
Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me.
Jesus has revealed himself through His own words.
“I told you, and you do not believe.”
Jesus has revealed himself through His own works.
Don’t you remember all of the stuff I’ve done.
How could they forget?
But they have still rejected Christ. They have heard his word, seen his works, and they not only don’t believe. They hate him for it.
John 10:26 NASB95
“But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep.
Jesus speaks beyond the what to the why.
Why do these people not believe in Christ?
Why do people today not believe in Christ.?
They are not His sheep.
Let’s take a minute to see the weightiness of what Jesus just said.
In light of the context, Jesus has just told them they he has not came to give them life abundant.
Without Christ as their Shepherd, they will be lost sheep, headed for trouble.
How do we know they aren’t sheep?
Other than the fact that Jesus just told us they aren’t.
What are the marks of Christ sheep?
John 10:27 NASB95
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;
My sheep hear my voice.
Romans 10:17 NASB95
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
James 1:22 NASB95
But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.
Romans 10:17 NASB95
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
2 Timothy 3:13–15 NASB95
But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
His sheep don’t just hear his voice initially.
As we discussed last time, this isn’t mere accumulation of sound in the ears, this is an accumulation of Christ word’s in our hearts.
Spiritual hearing vs. Physical
The first mark of those who are Christ’s sheep is that hear Christ’s voice.
Jesus knows His sheep.
There is one thing for sure. Jesus is not mistaken in the statement he just made.
These men are not his. He knows this because he knows his own.
Illustration: Imagine a day care trying to give you a kid that ain’t yours.
He knows them.
This is comforting for those who are His sheep.
This is scary, because he knows our seepest darkest secrets, but even that should be welcome by a true sheep. (Psalm 139)
We are known by our Shepherd.
Revelation 13:7–8 NASB95
It was also given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain.
:
Peter isn’t running to Jesus telling Jesus, hey someone else got saved.
He already wrote them name. He knows the sheep.
Not only do we hear his voice, he knows us. but thirdly.
They follow me.
His sheep follow Him.
While this is at time comforting and rewarding, (), this also cost us.
Mark 8:34 NASB95
And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
Mark 8:36 NASB95
“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
Mark 8:36 NASB95
“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
Following Christ involved denying ourselves.
When its sin or Christ, we deny ourselves and follow Christ.
When its comfort or Christ, we deny ourselves and follow Christ.
etc.
Fourthly,
Look in verse 28
John 10:28 NASB95
and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
They have eternal life and they will never perish.
This happens through hearing and believing.
we are given eternal life.
This is more than just living forever.
Eternal life is knowing God-
John 17:3 NASB95
“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
FIfthly,
They have security in Christ and the Father.
They have security in Christ and the Father.
Secure in Christ’s hand.
Correction of the false doctrine of losing salvation.
Where does our salvation rest?
Why are we saved.
We are saved by Christ alone.

no one will snatch them out of My hand.

29 “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.

Most of the time, those who say you can lose your salvation are those who think that they initially earned their salvation
Those who Christ saves are His.
Christ has closed his hand around us, and He guarantees he has us.
The security of our salvation rests in the Savior’s ability to keep us safe and saved.
The security of our salvation rests in the Savior’s trustworthiness to keep his promises.
What this does not mean:
This does not mean that profession of Christ equals possession of Christ.
Some folks have an unbiblical understanding of the security we have in Christ.
Some folks have took security in Christ and used it as a license for sin.
I’m secure in Christ now, I can live how I want.
They cling to a prayer once prayed, an aisle once walked.
But please understand, The Bible does not say pray this prayer and you will be saved.
What it does say is:
Romans 10:13 NASB95
for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Matthew 24:13 NASB95
“But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.
How do we know we have truly have Christ?
When we have truly persevered to the end.
Revelation 2:10 NASB95
‘Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
it is those who overcome in John’s Revelation that will receive the crown of life. Not those who walked an aisle.
Hear me out, It is not our perseverance that keeps us saved. It is God’s preservation of us that keeps us saved. Our being kept by Christ is evidenced by our keeping our self in him.
But not only are we secure in Christ’s hand.
Secure in the Father’s hand. (black preacher if time)
Verse 29.
Our salvation is secure in the Father’s hand as well.
He is greater than all.
It is His will that all who are saved by Christ would be saved. That he lose nothing.
John 6:38–39 NASB95
“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. “This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.
His sheep are safer than all. He is powerful enough to keep us.
We have this double security, because of verse 30.
John 10:30 NASB95
“I and the Father are one.”
The trinity:The union of the Father and Son and the spirit is not just a fancy word we use in theology. It is the truth of this doctrine that sustains us.
Those is Christ are in the Father and in the Spirit.
The trinity is at work in our salvation.
The Father has planned it.
The Son has accomplished it.
The Spirit has sealed it.
We see every aspect of this in
Ephesians 1:13–14 NASB95
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
Application?
We have see the marks.
Do those describe you?
Do you believe?
These Pharisees hate Jesus because he isn’t the person they want him to be. This shows who is god in their lives at this point.
Those who reject Christ reject him because they desire him to be who they want him to be.
Those who accept him accept him for who he is.
