We have been studying as a church discipleship as a whole foe a few weeks. Pastor Steven has done a great job of exposing the truth of scripture in Romans 12:1-2 This morning it is only fitting that we start there. Open your Bibles to the book of Romans. Romans is in the New Testament. We will start there and refer back to the Gospel of Mark, and the Gospel of John. We spend a majority of our time together this morning journeying through the book of John examining the subject of Rockstar Discipleship. So, turn with me in the bible to Romans 12:1-2 and lets stand together for the reading of God’s word. Romans 12:1-2 The verses will be displayed on the screen Lets read toghether starting with Romans 12:1 and listed in the sermon notes.

Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

John 1:42 NIV

And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).

John 21:19 NIV

Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father, Awesome God. Thank you for your word. We thank you that it does not go out and return empty. We thank you for Jesus who gave us an examples for discipleship and we thank you for the Holy spirit who empowers believers to speak boldly

We pray right now that you fill this place with your spirit and you word will be proclaimed boldly. We pray that your word will make a difference in the lives of the people gathered here today. We pray that you oh, Lord be honored and glorified. We pray all these things in Jesus name Amen.

Thank you Brother Steven for giving me this opportunity to preach. This morning we are going to do things a little bit differently. Starting with a different kind of Title: I’ve titled the sermon today Rockstar Discipleship. Today we will be talking about a man from the bible who is a bit of a rockstar and we will be talking about discipleship.

Rockstar Discipleship?

The man I am talking about was a bit impulsive. He dove right in to whatever he was doing. He wanted to do things his own way. He was a bit of a rockstar. He was rough around the edges. He was a fisherman his name was Simon. Jesus spent three years disciple-ing Simon but lets look at the bible and meet Simon where he met Jesus.

John 1:42 NIV

And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).

when Simon met Jesus not only did he find salvation. Jesus also called him the rock. This was prophetic. Jesus would spend the next three years discipling him into the rock. This was the beginning. It was just Point A

Yet in the last days Simon spent with Jesus; Jesus called him to lead the early church.

From point A to Point B

The New Testament records Simon Peter to be the the rash impulsive disciple who on one hand has enough faith to walk on water and on the other cuts of the temple guards man’s ear. Simon Peter boldly proclaimed Jesus as messiah, yet sometimes didn’t quite get the Savior’s message. Simon Peter began as a simple fisherman but Simon Peter became a leader in the early church. Sometimes I think we forget that

Discipleship is a Process.

It is the journey in between salvation and heaven. Discipleship is a process. It is the steps between point A and point B. Discipleship is a Process. it is the growth that occurs while you move from the milk to the meat.

Discipleship is a Process that works in our lives moving us from Salvation to Glorification.

Discipleship is moving from Point A in your walk with the Lord to Point B.

How did Jesus guide Peter from rockstar to “the rock”? What did it take to grow the most impulsive, hard-headed of all disciples into an apostle who would lead the early church into exponential growth?

What steps did Jesus Use?

When Jesus called Peter and the other disciples it was a call to be DISCIPLES. It was a call to be learners . As Peter journeyed with the other disciples Peter learned about the kingdom of God.

Disciple means Learner

One way that Peter learned is through Jesus’ teaching. Jesus Taught Peter.

The Gospel of John records times when Jesus taught with sermons. but this was only one way Jesus discipled peter. Jesus was a master of the spoken Jesus knew relying solely would be like training doctors only in the class room. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want a heart surgeon touching me with out some experience.

Learning via teaching was one step in Peter’s discipleship. Another step in Peter’s journey was observation. Peter observed Jesus.

Peter observed Jesus

In just the book of John; Peter observed Jesus turn water into wine, cleanse the temple, heal the sick the blind and the lame. Peter saw Jesus feed the 5000 and pick up the pieces. Peter was on the boat when Jesus instantly transported it to the shore. Peter endured when people picked up rocks to stone christ. He was there when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead.

Peter walked through life with Jesus for three years. These were a few of the events that Peter experienced with Jesus.

Walking this Journey with Jesus as awesome as it it must have been was only a part of Peter’s discipleship. Observing Jesus was a way that Peter moved from being a rockstar toward being the rock.

Time

After all moving through time is a normal part of life. How many of you are getting older? Time waits for no man. One time one of the boys asked me dad how old are you going to be on your birthday? I told him 29. He said “Dad you can’t be 29 every year.” He’s right the clock keeps ticking and the seasons change. In the Greek Language this kind of time was called chronos. Chronos, we get our english word Chronological from it.

chronos describes a progression of time.

chronos is time moving forward. Moving from A to B.

There is another word in the Greek Language for time kairos. Do you remember the day you met your spouse? Have you ever been on a family vacation? Do you remember where you were when you had an argument with a co-worker? Where were you when you heard about the events of September 11, 2001?

kairos describes an event in time.

Kairos is when God shows up and connects the dots. You learn about the kingdom.

Kairos moments can be recognised by the impact they leave on you.

Peter had a few kairos moments in his life. Lets Look at one quickly. in chapter 18 of John. John 18

It was Thursday Peter and many of the disciples went with Jesus to pray in the garden they had been there many times before. Suddenly there was a clammor on the road. Men are approaching with torches and lanterns and weapons. Judas? Judas is guiding a detachment of soldiers toward their location. Peter didnt know what to do. So he draws his sword and strikes one of the high priest’s servant. but there is no fight.

Jesus ordered Peter, “Put back your sword. Do you think for a minute I’m not going to drink this cup the Father gave me?”

12–14  Then the Roman soldiers under their commander, joined by the Jewish police, seized Jesus and tied him up. They took him first to Annas, father-in-law of Caiaphas. Caiaphas was the Chief Priest that year.

So Peter and another disciple go the Annus’ house and the other disciple knows people at the house and gets the servant to let Peter in and the young servant girl says “ don’t I know you? Arent you one of this man’s disciples? and Peter denies christ, once to to her, a second time while he is warming himself by the fire, and a third time to a the high priest’s servant. Then… the rooster began to crow. Peter isn’t referenced again until Chapter 20

Jesus suffers a kangaroo court and a flogging carry’s his cross up the hill and dies. and is burried in a borrowed tomb.

In chapter 20

Early in the morning while it is still dark Mary Magdeline comes running up to Peter and John

and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen (Jn 20:2–7 NIV).

Then the disciples went back to where they were staying. John’s Gospel does not record anything more about Peter until chapter 21.

Peter decides to go fishing with some of the other disciples.

So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus Reinstates Peter

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

Whew, tough times for Peter, huh? Did yall notice anything about Peter in the huge section of scripture we just summarized? They went to the garden at night, Peter denies christ during the night 3 times before the rooster crows. The race to the tomb while it is still dark and they fish all night and catch nothing.

Peter was going through some dark times, wasn’t he?

talk about a kairos moment… Because kairos momnet do more than leave an impact on you.

Kairos moments signal a chance to change.

Peter had an opportunity turn away form the pattern of denying Christ and follow Christ and on a different level. Jesus challenged him to “Feed” & care for his flock. He enabled the “rockstar” to become the “rock.” Quite a change.

As we move toward our time of invitation think about the kairos moments that have shaped you? What events have changed your life?

These two cups of water represent a moment of time in a life. as we move through life there are opportunities to connect with Christ. As we live there are times when the holy spirit is speaking. There are times when God is calling you to do great things.

2 cups of water. one cup with 1 tsp of baking soda. Drop 5 drops of iodine in each and stir. observe the change

What opportunities is the Lord giving you? Is he extending an opportunity to Repent and believe? Is he calling you to accept him as your personal savior? Has he given you a better view of the Kingdom? Come forward and share with Bro Steven or myself. Lets pray, then the worship team will lead us in a time of invitation.
