How many believe Jesus is coming soon…?
My Job as a Pastor is to:
Make you ready to face Jesus when he returns or when you go to him
To empower you through God’s Spirit
Encourage you through God’s Truth
Warn you through God’s word
Call us all to maturity
My job is not to:
Just tell you things that make you feel content and safe (when reality is otherwise)
Allow you to be less than you could be
We are living in a time of tremendous apathy in Western Christianity
lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern on the part of many Christians
Leaders are called to combat this trend and compel the church to be what Jesus died for
Jesus’s most serious words were for:
Religious leaders of the day
Future Christians (parable examples)
Jesus gives us a solemn reminder in Luke 12
What would his servants do?
Would impatience and worldliness creep in?
Would the church lose her sense of accountability and her readiness to meet her Lord?
Chapter12:35.....Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 as though you were waiting for your master to return from the wedding feast.
Then you will be ready to open the door and let him in the moment he arrives and knocks(Luke 12:35-36).
Are we ready
(1) Preparation—“be dressed ready … ”
(2) Maintenance—“keep your lamps burning”
(3) Expectation—“[and be] like men waiting for their master”
Dressed for service
Girded up…ready to move quickly
Do we live with an attitude that:
Every day is an opportunity for us to do something for God
Every person we meet is a divine appointment
We want to do whatever we can for the Kingdom
Ready to work
Ready to give
Ready to respond
Lamps
The lamps (Greek luchnos) referred to are the small clay lamps.
To keep them burning requires both an expenditure of effort and resources.
Lamps kept burning must be refilled periodically with olive oil,
the wicks must be trimmed occasionally,
and they must be checked lest the wind were to blow one out.
Expectation
What are we expecting and waiting for in our Christianity
Jesus’s return (creates a totally different way of living and thinking)
or
Jesus’s blessings now
37 The servants who are ready and waiting for his return will be rewarded.
I tell you the truth, he himself will seat them, put on an apron, and serve them as they sit and eat! 38 He may come in the middle of the night or just before dawn.[a]
But whenever he comes, he will reward the servants who are ready.
Jesus goes on to speak about people who are not ready
45 But what if the servant thinks, ‘My master won’t be back for a while,’ and he begins beating the other servants, partying, and getting drunk?
46 The master will return unannounced and unexpected, and he will cut the servant in pieces and banish him with the unfaithful.
This is speaking to “servants” of the master = Christians
They are willfully and recklessly without regard abusing their position
Apparently these servants are banish with the unfaithful.
Now I am trying to scare you....!?
No....I am telling you what Jesus said
47 “And a servant who knows what the master wants, but isn’t prepared and doesn’t carry out those instructions, will be severely punished.
48 But someone who does not know, and then does something wrong, will be punished only lightly.
When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required.
What have we been entrusted with?
