Intro:
Have you ever seen The Sixth Sense? Where the famous line “I see dead people?” Well Bruse Willis character is a counselor, helping a young boy through his trauma. In the midst of twist and turns we learn that the Bruce Willis’ character is actually dead, which you don’t realize until the end. They really did a marvellous job of hiding it until the reveal. There were clues and nuggets, that you now see , but you didn’t before, but they were there.
Mark is doing the opposite of what M Knight Shamalan was doing in the sixth sense. Mark is not covering up any thing he wants you to see that this Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. He flat out says it in the first verse. The rest of the Gospel is his evidence that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God.
Imagine we were in a courtroom and Mark is the attorney, making a case that this Jesus is the messiah the Son of God. Lets review some of what Mark has covered, his evidence.
The messiah’s forerunner
The messiah’s coronation
The messiah’s victory over Satan and sin
The messiah’s preaching
The messiah’s authority over man
Today Mark will continue his case, he will call two witnesses to the stand one is a hostile witness the other is not to testify that Jesus is the messiah, the son of God because His Authoritative teaching ministry and His Authority over the spirit world.

4. This town was also a border town between two different rulers/governors/mayors Phillip & Herod which means there was a Customs office there. Which also means there were Roman military garrisons around. But the relationship in Capernaum between Jews and Roman garrisons were friendly. In we learn of a Roman centurion who loved Israel and built a synagogue for them. This man was also found pleading for the life of his servant, whom Jesus healed.

2. What was Jesus doing? Teaching
Why was Jesus teaching in the synagogue?
How was he teaching? He was the new kid on the block, only been around for about 6 months, sure his fame was spreading, but still.
Hear is what we know about the Jewish synagogue
“According to custom, Jesus enters the synagogue on the Sabbath and begins to teach. Unlike the temple in Jerusalem where animal sacrifice was practiced by priests, Jewish synagogues, according to rabbinic nomenclature, were “assembly halls” or auditoriums where the Torah was read and expounded. There was but one temple (in Jerusalem), whereas synagogues, the Greek derivation of which simply means “gathering places,” could be found throughout the Mediterranean world wherever ten or more Jewish males, thirteen years of age or older, were present. The only official in charge of a synagogue was the “ruler of the synagogue,” a position that included the responsibilities of librarian, worship committee, custodian, and perhaps schoolteacher. The ruler of the synagogue did not preach or expound the Torah, however, which meant that Sabbath teaching and exposition fell to the laity, and on this occasion to Jesus.16”
C. Mark calls a Jewish Scribe to the stand.

First, what is a scribe?

a) I believe the first time we read about scribes is during the reign of king David. 2 sam. 8:16-17, and at this time scribes were general secretaries and recorder.

b)It wasn't until much later, hundreds of years later that the function of the scribe evolved into an expert of the Torah or law, who we believe Ezra was the first.

c) by the time of Christ the function of the scribes have evolved even further experts in the law which made them professors/teachers and finally a civil lawyer of the law. So on the Sabbath they instructed the synagogue, but during the week the synagogue turned into a school.

d) Now, here is whats very important to our text, these scribes were dependent on the teachings of the teachers that taught them, in the Gospels you will read Jesus talking to them about the traditions of their elders (), because the source of their authority was what their teacher/teachers have taught them. So when they got up to speak about the law they would say this is what Rabbi said about this and this is what Rabbi said about that.

a) “and they” who is they, everyone in the synagogue including the scribes. Now if this scribe came on the stand maybe Mark would ask what do you know about Jesus of Nazerth? What was he like? What did he do? but eventually he would get to the question what was he like when he was teaching?

We were astonished literally to be driven out of one’s senses by a sudden shock (another word Mark uses frequently) Of this scribe had a Iphone he would have text someone an emoji of the mind blown.
Jesus also taught with authority (power, dominion rule) not like us scribes. We are dependent on the law and those who taught us. So when we teach we say Rabbi soso said this and Rabbi popo said that… but Jesus when he teaches, its lit. He don’t quote no Rabbis, he says things you have heard it said thou shall not commit adultery, but i say unto you if you look at another woman lustfully you have done so already.
3. Jesus was the authority. He was teaching the Jewish people the original intent of the law, which is not just a list of do’s and don’ts, not a score card to measure your worthiness or others unworthiness. not a list for us to follow so we can look good on the outside because we are doing our best to follow, while we are dead on the inside. The law was given so that you can recognize how sinful you really are and how much you really need Jesus. All that Jesus was teaching was blowing their minds, hurting their authority.

By the time of Christ the religious system was corrupt, and leading people on a paved highway to hell. How did it get that way?
And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
2 Corinthians 11:
I think this man with an unclean spirit was a false teacher attempting to lead people astray and while Jesus was teaching with authority this demon could not help it any longer, Jesus was teaching truth and satan hates truth
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s de2sires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.

a. “What have you to do with us Jesus of Nazereth?”
a. “What have you to do with us Jesus of Nazereth?”
This doesn’t come across in english, but this is not the demon being polite
This is idiomatic expression almost as if these demons are saying what is t to you what we are doing Jesus, mind your own business.
b. “Have you come to destroy us?”
b. “Have you come to destroy us?”
Almost as if they knew the purposes of God through Christ
e Jesus was teaching truth and satan hates truth

Notice the contrast unclean vs holy

The Message of Mark 3. Jesus Displays His Authority (1:21–31)
Mark wishes us to know in his gospel, and he uses six different Greek words to communicate it, that Jesus constantly filled people with a mixture of wonder, awe and fear at what he said and did (1:27; 2:12; 4:41; 5:15, 20, 33, 36, 42; 6:50, 51; 9:6, 15, 32; 10:24, 32 (twice); 11:18; 12:17; 15:5, 44; 16:5 ff., 8).
