Introduction:
How do we summarize the entire chapter - Paul tells Timothy to be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, then he shows him what this strength looks like.
This would avoid any strong arm approach or stand-off-ish extremity.
- this strength looks like the metaphors
- this strength looks like someone who trusts God’s faithfulness
- this strength looks like someone who discerns false doctrine
- this strength looks like someone who gently instructs those who are under the lie of the devil.
This would rule out:
Passivity is: acceptance of what happens, without active response or resistance.
Illustration: Monkey in Nepal takes ice cream from small child
Proposition:
Because of God's grace, Christians must endure in a wise and proactive manner.
(1) Endurance involves empowered preparation (v.
20 - 21)
(a) this preparation is understood as we are among the body of Christ (v.
20)
(a) this preparation is understood as we are among the body of Christ (v.20) -
(b) this preparation is a cleansing from false teachings
(b) this preparation is a cleansing from false teachings
(2) Endurance involves empowered practical living (v.
22)
He wants Timothy to believe that there is contamination with false doctrine that could make him unfit for the master's use.
He wants him to cleanse himself of false teaching that would allow for joining with iniquity, so that Timothy would be holy.
This is a PERFECT PASSIVE PARTICIPLE which implies several things: (1) they were sanctified in the past and that state or condition continues (PERFECT TENSE); (2) they were sanctified by God (PASSIVE VOICE).
Notice the condition of one choosing to cleanse himself and then the statement of God’s action.
Sanctification is both a divine act and a human act.
This pattern characterizes the covenant relationship in all of God’s dealings with humans.
He always takes the initiative and sets the agenda, but mankind must respond appropriately and continue to respond.
Application:
(a) The application of fleeing
There is an unquestionable connection between bad doctrine and poor behavior.
This connection is not just outside of the household of faith, but it happens inside of the church.
It is doctrine that is related to the completed work of Jesus Christ.
(2) Endurance involves empowered practical living (v.
22)
(a) The application of fleeing -
(b) The application of following
(b) The application of following
(3) Endurance involves patience and faith in God (v.
23 - 26)
RIGHTEOUSNESS - RIGHT LIVING OUT OF A RIGHT STANDING
FAITH - BEHAVIORS THAT ARE CONSISTENT WITH A FULL FAITH IN THE FINISHED WORK OF JESUS CHRIST -
CHARITY - AGAPE
PEACE -
(a) There is patience in refusing to be quarrelsome
Application:
For a young person, there are deceitful lusts that tend to be very prevalent in our lives:
We begin to think that if I can just have that game
If I can just have that girl
If I can just have that job
If I can just have that etc....THEN I WILL BE HAPPY...
What happens then is that we make the wrong people out to be enemies because they are keeping us from what we think will bring us ultimate happiness.
The truth is that we have believed a lie.
That lie that something else will satisfy our appetites is because we have chosen to reject how sufficient Jesus and the doctrine of Jesus is.
In truth, false doctrine is most effective, not when it says that Jesus is a lie but when it says that Jesus is not ENOUGH.
(3) Endurance involves empowered patience and faith in God (v.
23 - 26)
(a) There is patience in refusing to be quarrelsome
(b) There is to be gentleness in teaching
(b) There is to be gentleness in teaching
(c) There is to be a hopefulness that God will do his work
(c) There is to be a hopefulness that God will do his work
(d) There is faith in God because of the work of the devil
(d) There is faith in God because of the work of the devil
Application:
Our first responsibility is not to ostracize those who have been deceived by false doctrine but to gently instruct them.
What should we teach them?
Should we teach them, “Christians don’t live like that!”
Should we teach them, “Shape up or get out!”
Should we teach them, “Either get right or get out!”
NO! NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!
We should teach them:
God’s grace has been extended to us in the person of Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ rose from the dead to conquer the sin that you can’t stop desiring
Jesus Christ lives and empowers people to no longer be a slave to sin
Anyone who believes upon Jesus to the repentance of sin will be delivered from the wages of sin and will receive power over sin.
Conclusion:
Christian endurance is not passivity:
It is empowered preparation
It is empowered practical living
It is empowered patience and faith in God
Questions:
(1) Have you swallowed a teaching that is making you try to find your sufficiency in someone or something other than Jesus Christ?
(2) What youthful lusts are you susceptible to?
(3) What kind of heart do you have towards those who are under captivity of Satan?
(4) Maybe, you’re the one whom God has granted repentance to this evening.
Are you tired of trying to fight against what you know will ultimately deliver you?
